Many Japanese and Chinese looks quite similar. Huge variations in both populations.

Ainu, Azami, Ryukyuan, etc. people were not mentioned as part of the Japanese people.

Even Han Chinese were settlers from many different areas of various ethnicities who later settle down mainly at the central plain. So it's not a simple generalisation. Han Chinese themselves can be very different with different features.
