In the 1930s, air travel was a new and frightening phenomenon. And financially, the only way large, long-distance airplanes could remain in the air was by combining passenger fares with airmail and cargo contracts. Enter the DC-3 in 1935. Its safety and dependability quickly became legendary. Its economy of acquisition and operation made it profitable to carry passengers only. Its passengers-only design introduced a level of comfort that surpassed that of train travel. The DC-3 birthed the modern airline industry.
That was only the beginning. When World War II erupted, that same dependability made the military version of the plane, the C-47, an irreplaceable asset. From troop transport to paratroop jump plane; from glider tow plane to cargo carrier, the C-47, “Gooney Bird” was a superstar in every theater. General Dwight David Eisenhower said, “Four things won the Second World War: the bazooka, the Jeep, the atom bomb, and the C-47 Gooney Bird.”
