RULES:

The object of the game is to be the last player standing. Arrange spoons in a small circle in the center of the table. You need 1 spoon fewer than there are players. Shuffle a standard deck of cards (without jokers) and deal 4 cards to each player. Each player tries to make four-of-a-kind.

The dealer draws a card off the top of the deck, then discards a card from his hand and passes it face-down to the player on his left who then does the same from the pile of cards the dealer gives them.

Cards are picked up and passed quickly around the table from player to player until a player gets four-of-a-kind. Once you have 4-of-a-kind you are allowed to take a spoon from the center. Once a player takes a spoon, anyone can grab a spoon and the race is on. However, if players fail to notice a spoon taken, players continue playing the round until everyone has realized spoons have been taken.

The player who took the first spoon reveals their hand showing the 4-of-a-kind. If they don’t in fact have a 4 of a kind they receive a letter otherwise the player who failed to grab a spoon gets a letter towards spelling the word “SPOON”. Players continue to accumulate letters every time they lose, then they are eliminated.

When a player is eliminated, remove 1 spoon from the center of the table. The first player to take a spoon of each round deals the next. The winner of the game is the last person standing.

A fun alternative way to play is to place the spoons in another room so that the players have to physically get up and race to the spoons.

We played this a lot. It was fun being slick: when you had 4-of-a-kind, you’d quietly and sneakily slide a spoon out and keep playing, waiting for the other players to notice one missing and then make their mad grabs for the remaining spoons. At that point it’s like Musical Chairs when the music stops.

I have been witness to the actual breaking of furniture in playing this game. It is one of the best games to play. The more people...the better.

Literally my only memory of this game wasn't even this game. It was a flash game with Spongebob that follows the same rules, but with AI and Spatulas. Still nice to know where it originated from and how to play it

This was not what i expected... i thought this was a tutorial for playing the spoons, like as an instrument :D oh well, now i know a new card game ^^

I remember doing this but instead of trying to get a 4 of a kind, you have to get 4 math questions right (the cards were math questions, and instead of there being real spoons, if you get a question wrong, you get a letter and try to not get the letters to the word SPOONS).

We used to play this, but instead of having spoons on the table, the deck was on the table, and you had to place your hand on the deck if you had four of a kind, while saying the name of the game out loud. Then other players would place their hands on top and the last one (the player whose hand was on top of all others') was "the loser". Also a different word was used, but interestingly it's another 5-letters word, so the number of "lives" would be the same.

We play this but we call it tongues, we use our tongues instead of spoons. It's funny when 3 of us have our tongues out and the last person is still playing 😂

I have a proposition regarding when cards run and at least one spoon was taken: If at least one spoon was taken but not everyone notices and keeps playing until no more cards are left, then the people who did not notice get a letter.
