Scritta da Bob Thiele (con lo pseudonimo George Douglas) e George David Weiss, fu interpretata per la prima volta da Louis Armstrong, e pubblicata come singolo agli inizi di autunno del 1967. Il significato simbolico del brano What a Wonderful World è stata intesa dai suoi autori come un invito alla scoperta del piacere della vita: dai toni ottimistici e rilassati, esalta la bellezza del mondo e della diversità fra i popoli, oltre a costituire un invito a non diffidare del futuro. Fu pensata come una sorta di antidoto al crescente clima di tensione politico e razziale negli USA e scritta appositamente per Armstrong, il quale faceva presa sul pubblico.
