Capsule Endoscopy: This non-invasive procedure involves swallowing a small capsule equipped with a camera that captures images as it travels along your gastrointestinal tract. There are two types of capsule endoscopy - one which investigates the small bowel and a second that investigates the large bowel.
Indications for Video Capsule Endoscopy include:
- Unreachable bleeding from the stomach or intestine
- Screening for coeliac disease and inflammatory bowel diseases
- Iron deficiency anaemia
- Detection of small growths (polyps) indicated by CT or MRI scans
How it works:
The capsule used for this procedure is approximately the size of a large vitamin capsule, or the end of your little finger. It is equipped with a camera and a light that work together to capture images of the lining of the small or large intestine.
Patients are instructed to swallow the capsule with a glass of water that contains a solution. This solution is designed to dissolve any bubbles in the digestive juices, which will result in clearer images. The capsule is naturally passed through stool without detection.
Benefits over alternatives:
Compared to invasive advanced endoscopic procedures, Video Capsule Endoscopy offers a simpler, safer, and more comfortable experience for patients.
