Week 31, you're in your 7th month with only 2 more months to go. The baby is the size of a coconut. At 16 inches and 3.2 lbs. your baby is quickly approaching his birth length — though he's got to pack on another 3 to 5 pounds before delivery day. He's also putting in longer stretches of sleep, which is why you're probably noticing more defined patterns of wakefulness, movement, and rest.
- Your baby's pupils can constrict and expand, and she may be able to detect the dim outlines of shapes, but not their colors. Most notably, her iris will become pigmented. However, no matter what color eyes your baby is born with, the color almost always changes after birth. Your baby's true eye color won't appear for six to nine months after delivery. Also, your baby can open and close her eyes.
- Your baby may not be able to smell anything right now because he's still submerged in amniotic fluid. Lucky for you and your baby, yours will be one of the very first scents he breathes in, a scent that will quickly become his very favorite.
- Your baby's lungs and digestive tract continue to develop.
- As you near the end of the third trimester, your baby will begin to settle head-down into your pelvis. However, some babies don't make this journey until late in the last trimester, and about 4% of babies don't make the switch, remaining in a breech position at delivery.
- As the baby grows bigger each day, your abdomen enlarges. You may experience a mild ache in your rib cage and pelvis.
- You may experience additional swelling in your legs. Try to lie on your side when sleeping or resting.
- You may experience even more heartburn this week as your uterus presses against your internal organs. You can relieve heartburn by remaining upright after eating, and by eating smaller, more frequent meals.
- Some women begin to notice colostrum leaking from their breasts. If you’re experiencing this, you may want to use breast pads.
