Junji Ito Maniac: Japanese Tales of the Macabre is a new horror anime and psychological anime based on short stories from peak horror author Junji Ito. Although it isn't a great adaptation from netflix the stories are enough to give you chills and the anime does decent to portray the right themes. Can't wait for the uzumaki adaptation #anime #manga #junjiitocollection

I really don't think you can ever adapt Ito's works into anime. Part of the horror is the insane levels of details in his manga panels. You can see just about every crease, crack, and boil on his grotesque monsters. You'd have to have an absurdly high budget to anime with that much detail.

I feel that if they didn't color it, it might be fine. Because a big part of Junji Ito's work is the way he makes the black work with the white.

That dad running out of the house to work in the balloon one made me palm my face hard… man really was all ride and die for his corporate work.

Yall…
Just read the manga 💀
They never do his work any good
I could go into DEPTH on why the visuals just DO NOT work in the anime.
The visuals are such a core part of Junji Ito’s work and the past few anime adaptations have been animated by the same studio - and it’s never good.
There are many glaring animation issues.
Swear to god - the only visually appealing thing in the show is the intro.
Which was animated by a different studio.

Read the manga. Has a much better effect.

I am a very huge Junji Ito fan and this adaptation had some of my favorite stories of his like something as messed up as Bully, strangely endearing like Whispering Woman, carefully crafted with heavy themes like The Hanging Balloons and my absolute favorite story in terms of both artwork and story Layers of Fear. They are all just perfect. It is such a pity they messed them up.

Also Tomie is supposed to look like a Goddess while having a presence of manovelence. Here she looks like a typical average girl instead of the evil demoness I know and love.

One small thing I liked though-the color scheme they chose for the character of the Ice Cream Man from Ice Cream Bus. He still retains his good looks from the manga but the white hair and eye color in the otherwise dull colored environment also gives him a creepier look.

Hopefully Uzumaki would be different from the other adaptations and manage to keep the creepiness

I was just happy to see Souichi return from the original anime. Definitely my favorite character because of the comedic break from the horrors that is Junji Ito.

For people saying Ito's work cannot really be adapted to anime properly in terms of visual, I'd say wrong. It definitely can work, colors and shading really matters, I mean, just look at Angel's egg or even the short film Puparia

The first episode made me laugh so much for no reason and so did the ice cream truck one. I just find it funny that its supposed to be scary how all the kids friends melted into ice cream but the kid is just chilling and licking them 🤣💀💀💀

I wish they had done a Tomie series instead, they didn't even need to be adaptations, they could do their own stories with Tomie 😭

I actually liked it! Especially seeing my favorite stories being animated such Long Hair in The Attic, Whispering Woman, Layers of Terror (the way she teared her face off along with the sound effect was 🤢🤮), Tomie, and Hanging Balloon! Especially Tomie's and I absolutely adored her voice actress because it was very different in a way and not at all what I expected. You expect to hear a voice that sounds very sweet and playful, but hers was mysterious and eery in a way. I can go on what I love about each favorite episode. One thing I like to point out about the Hanging Balloon episode was giving similar vibes in that one episode of Gravity Falls where Grunkle Stan's hot air balloon turned into a nightmare fuel and was flying towards people. I thought it was silly comparison!
But yeah I know you guys wanted more dark dark dark stuff but when you guys go back to reading these stories, there is still some goofy elements to it like the reactions and the way people think in the situations they're in. And Junji Ito is just one those "when the artist doesn't match the art" because his personality is like a ray of sunshine.
I think the best way to describe Junji Ito's work is like Goosebumps and Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. I'm no way comparing his work to his because Junji Ito is unique along with the work he comes up with.
I know my opinion will probably upset people because I don't dislike it but there must be some people out there who at least liked something. I also just wanna share a different perspective without bashing anyone.

I watched this with my grandparents because I love junji itos work and wanted to see what the animated version was like and I felt second hand embarrassment that this had to be my grandparents first introduction to junji Ito. I had to keep reminding them that the manga is so much creepier and so much more interesting. The anime just doesn’t do it justice. I really hope that uzumaki ends up amazing!!

I would have stopped after the first episode but my mother gave it an opportunity so we both ended up finishing it on a weekend

The episode that is not that scary is where a boy called Soichi keeps getting annoyed by his brother so the family decides to make a new soundproof room for him and the constructor that is building the new room for Soichi takes inspiration from Soichi's brother and makes the sound proof room have layers inside them and so that Soichi's brother can go inside the four door layers and annoy his Soichi even more and at one moment when Soichi chases his brother through the maze of layers I got a bit claustrophobic 😅
