Good thoughts, Eric. I remember when things really started to change: it was YouTube. If I choose one camera, I think it was the the marketing for the Sony A6000 and they promoted the number of points and focus speed that they pulled out of somewhere. Sony was saying "the fastest focussing system ever". After, it was the A7rii, with face detect. Personally, I'm fine with 1 center point with contrast detect and I'm happy for photos. Even for Youtube videos, you don't need anything special, just manual focus. The good news is we can buy old cameras and be very happy.

As my eye sight and my hand steadiness are not what it used to be, now that I am on the wrong side of the 60, AF and IBIS play a big role in my candid photography. Having said that, I still have a lot of my old manual focus SLR Nikons and I feel that if the the diopter of the viewfinder suited my eyes, those big and bright focusing screens are still a delight to use and for my style of photography, perhaps just as fast as the AF in my DSLRs. Sadly automation and computerisation of modern digital cameras have made photographers lazy and negated the required basic knowledge and skills of photography to irrelvance, to the extent that most modern photographers do not even know what an exposure meter does and what the reading means. Sad.

Well said. All need to resist the hype of each new release. Of course it’s what keeps our beloved camera brands in business. Maybe that’s why I’ve got my name on the list for the new D-Lux 8. Sticking with my Z 6ii though.
