What do you think about those results?
EDIT: 1.03 and not 1.3, apologies for the mistake in the naming

fuji has excellent tree autofocus. ever since the XT3

What makes this absolutely unacceptable is the cost of Fuji gear, the best bodies and glass aren't cheap and yet the autofocus still isn't better than probably a A6000. How wild is that?! I doubt it's the hardware, they simply can't figure out the software/auto-focus algorithm. Feels like I've wasted thousand of dollars investing in and trusting Fujifilm. Thanks for the tests.

I am also at a loss. I would like to ask Fujifilm what is happening? I don't shoot video, but I bought a new Fujifilm x-h2s camera more than two years ago so that (as Fujifilm claims) I could shoot events, reports and portraits without any problems. There is nothing complicated about this (I don’t shoot fast sports or flying birds...) it’s now 2024 and autofocus is already working well for all brands. But I have been using the Fujifilm X-mount system for 7 years and have a large fleet of xf lenses. But it turns out that I’m always waiting for improvement in focusing, which Fuji worsens with every new fw! This is completely unacceptable and impossible to work with.. Thanks for your video, perhaps Fuji will once again see this and draw conclusions.. Otherwise, I will have to switch from my favorite system to equipment from other brands. I'm losing clients and losing money, and I'm very upset...

Same issues with X-T5 with firmware 4.0. I think it's time to switch brands. I'm thinking of selling my Fuji equipment and going back to Nikon.

If Canon or Sony were on FW 7 they could probably focus and track individual atoms, whereas Fuji is can't distinguish between faces and hands.

Sold all my Fuji gear earlier this year after struggling with many missed shots during a family portrait shoot (well, kept my X100V). Switched over to Sony and I haven’t looked back. I’ve gotten much better at color grading my images and don’t mind the work flow. The Sony RAW files are super flexible, and even the mediocre Sony glass as sharp as the best glass on the Fuji system. That said, I have a soft spot for Fuji and would love to see them make a comeback. Unfortunately, with blunders like this, I feel they will relegate themselves to hobbyists and lose the trust of the working professional photographers.

Great video, we all hope they will do something about this AF stuff, especially for video.

Thank you so much for this video. Everyone reading this: Please write Fujifilm support an email and point out your frustration about this.

Thanks for the video, Thierry, I would agree that the AF is not where it should be on the Fuji system. Curious if you also tested "Area" mode in AF/MF Setting/AF Mode in this comparison. I can't remember where it was recommended but I remember it being suggested that "area" is much more reliable than 'multi', and I seem to get decent results in video with much less hunting and missing than in "Multi" mode, even in firmware v7.0. For stills I'm on "Single Point", and have been shooting AF-C on the more modern XFLMWR lenses. Most shots are sharp, but like others are experiencing here in the comments, sometimes I've had the the camera focus somewhere other than the eye when shooting people. With some of the older Fuji lenses I've recently been using the back button/AFS technique and it seems to be working ok. I'm also pretty happy to hop into manual focus if needed as I have a few manual lenses and I'm used to it. I can understand why people are thinking about jumping ship as workarounds are not ideal and there are of course far more reliable systems out there (in terms of autofocus especially). For me at the present time, the sensor and in turn the look of the files coming out of this camera are worth the extra effort.

In before the fanboys tells you to learn your camera and dial in your settings 😂😂😂

I sold all my Fuji kit over a year ago because of the false positive autofocus issues I experienced. I thought they would have resolved the issues by now, surprised it’s still there and even more surprising that it’s getting worse!! 😢

Thank you for testing / comparing the 'improvements' in AF. I am also not happy with the AF performance after the Firmware updates.
Thinking about a Lumix S5II(X). Fits very well in my hand, offers much for the money and with their latest Firmware AF is looking relieable.
And i personally think what Panasonic is doing with the Lumix Lab App looks interesting in case of using LUT´s.

I'm currently testing my two XH2S's, one on 1.03 the other 5.03. I never bothered with 6.00, 6.01 or 7.0. I'm predominantly a stills professional but I do dabble in video time to time. From my initial testing I can see that the 1.03 is a little more snappy, confident, however it looks like a lot of my tests the eye af is not great and is more 'ear' af. I can tell the system is racking focus smoother and not in jarring steps, but I wonder if the AF improvement that they were aiming for was to address the accuracy and in doing so cost them some smoother racking...
It's interesting to see a far greater amount of shots ringing out on my tests, but what does it really matter if the majority are all focused on the ear. It's like DSLR back focusing woes all over again...

Fuji AF is just not good for ANYTHING moving, period.

I’ve given up on Fuji. Just sent my X-T5 & lenses off to Wex as trade-in. So so frustrating.

I also have the XH2s and I’m pretty disappointed in the autofocus. Nikon and LUMIX are looking like more than compelling alternatives.

The main reason I’m staying with Fuji is the image that I get. I don’t need the best autofocus but this is ridiculous. But if their next firmware doesn’t fix the autofocus issues I’m going to jump to another brand.

I seriously am at a loss as to how they could turn an adequate af system into the worst in the market. What does Fuji have to say? Zip. What is even more shocking is with all this going on they can’t keep Fuji cameras in stock.

Good work, Fuji needs to see more of the reviews like yours. I think you are already being very generous to use the wide angle 18mm lens for the testing. I use the new 23mm f1.4 WR lens on X-T5 with firmware 4.0, just for still photography of my 3-year old toddler, the eye box keeps flying all over the place with not so challenging movements of my child. I don't do screen recording to prove my claim, and Fuji fanboys are bashing my complaints, telling me it's my user error, should practice single point AF-S and recompose, or "people in manual focus era can still take good toddler shots" etc...

I found your channel looking into Fuji back when I had the Z6ii and needed better AF and available glass (not the case with Nikon today!). I ended up jumping to Sony which eventually landed me on the A7RV… you may want to give this camera a look. Aside from the stellar AF / Subject Detection, 4D rear LCD mechanism, EVF rez, etc… what has revolutionized my photography is being able to punch instantly into Crop Mode and still have 26mp to use. This gives me an extra 1.5x extension to every lens. I’m finding the 26mp better than other ASPC bodies as it’s down-sampled from 61mp. I’ve loved the customization of the Sony bodies and the available glass (and used lenses) for this eco-system is amazing. I can’t believe the performance I’m getting from the recent Tamron Lenses. I’m still hoping Fuji get’s their act together as I love their colors, Sims, etc. But tbh, I think I prefer the colors on the recent Sony sensors to all the others (and in RAW it doesn’t really matter). Looking forward to watching your journey. Edit: I also think currently Nikon is the Kaizen King :D... they are supporting and updating their Z System bodies better than anyone else.

I am getting really frustrated with my X-h2s because the continuous AF keeps unfocusing my shots. It focuses and unfocuses even when I am NOT moving! I tried recording me and my boyfriend doing lifts on the beach, standing in the same spot, but the camera keeps hunting. I did not realise until after trying several lifts that the camera would focus and unfocus repeatedly. I had to change to manual focus, which fixed it. But the only reason that worked was because we were standing in the same spot. I couldn't record myself and my boyfriend walking down the beach because I had no one to turn the manual focus and the Continuous AF was being a di*k and unfocusing my shot every third second. This sucks because I was really looking forward to using this camera for video, but I feel like I have to do everything manual because the autofocus is NOT reliable at all! I mean, I can understand that it may not be able to track movement all the time, but when Im even just standing on the sam spot, it keeps hunting. Maybe I'm doing something wrong? It just doesnt make sense to me that the camera should unfocus and focus that often as mine does. Was using the 33mm f/1.4 lens. I am actually thinking about buying the Sony A7 iv.
