Have you ever wondered how your cat is able to think without a language? How are cats able to process thoughts and what do they think about all day?

In this material we’ll discuss how cats are able to process information and how natural instincts and positive/negative associations can play a major role in how your cat reacts to you and others.

We’ll also discuss how prior events can shape a cat’s actions and how felines use reason and logic to overcome a lack of language.

Enjoy the video! We hope you find it beneficial.

I have a cat that lost a rear leg. The vet told me that I would have more trouble dealing with him losing his leg than he would. True. He quickly figured out how to balance on three legs. Obviously he did not feel sorry for himself. He just found other ways of doing things. He can climb a tree or fence and still catches mice and birds etc.

I had a cat with diabetes, I had to give her insulin shots twice a day. She absolutely knew when it was time for her shots and took them very well! If I slept in late to administer her shot, she would come into the bed to press her wet nose against my nose to wake me up in the most gentle way possible! She was an amazing cat :)

the real question is why some people have the impression you need a language to think 🙄

Cats sure as hell think of themselves. They just don't think in the same way humans do and observe their surroundings more than we do.
Cats can be happy, jealous, nervous, protective etc. Each one is as also unique as we are.
Language is also a learned skill. Without it someone would still use noises as a means of expression. Animals are no different.

I think you vastly under estimate the mind of a cat.
My male cat not only remembered the sounds leading to treats but also the nice lady (my mother) who was nice to him a year ago. When a random person came in the house, he would come to see who it was but remain at a distance. With my mother, he would run right up to her.
He also remembered the layout of a place he used to live and went straight to his favorite window when I had a reason to go to that address again after being away for over a year.
He was also trained to the command "show me" and would lead me to what it was that he wanted me to fix and why he was working so hard to get my attention.

Cats given the opportunity do learn their carers language…….They need opportunity, respect, peace and quiet and most of all Love….All animals are love, they are just doing what it takes to survive……..They share the exact same emotions as humans, they are profoundly loyal, they have boundaries and are very capable of conveying their needs…..One of my rescues really wanted to talk, she just did not have a voice box, so she spoke in cat vocals with a very broad range of tone and pitch….I very quickly learnt what it all meant and we shared wonderful communication……The other three talk every day in cat tone but are not prolific like my first catty…..One day I was in the garden walking with Peggy and I asked her where was Tammy and she replied in cat vocals…. It was very deep sounding it was coming from deep within her….Her mouth was a circle and she used her meow in tone and pitch and she said “ ow ont no “…..meaning I don’t know…..it was beautiful, it was the only time in her nineteen years she tried to copy the human voice and she gave me words…… All of my catties have learned language from me they understand everything….just as a young child would…💕

Our cat can tell time as most can. She knows when I'm about to go to work and rubs her scent on my legs to let other felines know this human is mine. Also, treat time is 12 noon. At 11:45, she will talk, purr and direct me to her dish with mild headbutting and corraling me into the kitchen. She knows the words like her name, kiss, come, sit, and love. Results vary from cat to cat, but when unconditional love is given to most domestic animals, they will respond positively. You're mostly right on the spot with this video. Results may vary, lol.

They are pretty zen as is and they live in the now, but I prefer to think my cats have inner monologues that would be existential not unlike French New Wave or a Lady Dimitrescus diary entry.

No, I think in pictures and impressions most often now-a-days but, as a younger man, I thought mostly in words, sometimes so much so that I couldn't find a moment's silence from the voice in my head. It was kinda hellish actually, language speaking endlessly in my head.

Mental illness? Maybe.

Today, at past 60, I don't think that way as much. Now, it is the images and the recalled emotions that I recall and, that I think about... Not the words. These are so much better... much more efficient and, quicker to understand, to process. It took decades for it to change but, that is how I think today.

Some others in different cultures from what I was raised know about this and, they teach the techniques.

This stuff is well-worth learning.

One cat has distinctive meows for 'mom, dad, immediate excitement, greetings, feed me, lemmi out, ect
The other just grunts, unless he's caught 'prey and no ones down stairs to reward him, then he's basically a car alarm.

Actually, as a scientist I am not sure I agree with this, although cats lack the area of the brain known for language or memory, it does not mean that other areas of the brain cannot be utilised over time because of the constant stimulus of an owner that would simply not exist in the wild. Having worked with stroke patients during the pandemic and watched how some patients over time make new pathways in the brain to perform functions lost due to a damaged section of the brain, I dont think its beyond them, well some cats. Every organism evolves over time and although a couple of thousand years is a short amount of time for cats brains to evolve some form of language and or memory, I actually wouldnt rule it out. Plus you do always get the ones born with the next evolutionary phase. Basically simply by being with and interacting with humans constantly might be teaching parts of a cats brain to form rudimentary language and memory skills by utilising a different structure or structures in their current brain. After all humans apparently dont appear to utilise 90% of their current brain and so long as its not for example the base of the brain, the brain stem that controls basic autonomous, automatic functions such as breathing, some stroke patients do appear to start forming new networks, especially for speech.

I'm skeptical about cats not thinking into the future. Can't cats try not to eat too much at once so they can preserve food for the future? Like if they had an experience where food was not served for a long time, so when it is available, they learn to not eat all at once?

On the toy concept and association.. lol when my girl cat who is gonna be 5 years old this year was a baby, she of course loved toys. She liked new ones, understood balls and little mice toys. However, we got one of those toys one day that is like a stick with a bunch of fluffy feathers on a string coming off of it to play with. I realize now she had never seen anything that looked like it and I wonder if her brain went instinct and said, 'BAD!!! SNAKE!!' (or some sort of creature they instinctively don't wanna be around). That poor baby was 100% terrified when we tried to play with her with it the first time, she lost her kitten mind :(. It was sad and honestly pretty hilarious. So we comforted her, took the toy away for a while, and slowly just reintroduced it to her more cautiously. Now she absolutely loves stick feather toys, they're some of favorites!

One day i started to put on my boots.
Both of my cats jumped up and ran down the hall and peered out the bedroom door.
Both of my boots had dozens of milk jug rings, caps, and twist ties in them.
My cats had gathered them over weeks and put them there.
I went in the room and gave them belly gotchas while pretending to be mad.
They both laid back and seemed to be laughing.
This tells me they have thoughts and insights that we dont know about.
A practical joke is fairly high level reasoning especially for a cat.
