My dad was exactly the same. He didn't want cats. But when we convinced him and got the first one he was the biggest fan within a few days. When she passed and we wanted to get another cat a few years later he was again absolutely certain that we weren't getting a cat. A week later we had another cat and a few days after that she was his best friend. Then again, a couple years after getting her we found an injured stray and convinced him to temporarily let us look after her. A week later he was paying her vet bills and she never left either. lol

The reason why most fathers are hesitant to adopt a pet is because they fear getting emotionally attached to it. They know that they will treat the pet as if it were their own child, and if the pet were to go missing or pass away, they would be heartbroken. Losing a child is an incredibly difficult experience for any parent, and the thought of losing a beloved pet can be just as devastating.

I've never laughed and giggled like this before. Dad's look when the third cat was on his lap did it for me, he looked absolutely resigned to his fate. This video was a gift that kept on giving---literally!

Inevitably, the family member most vocally opposed to getting a pet is the one who develops the strongest BOND with them. As a kid, I was never allowed to have a pet. Then, just before I moved out, a stray cat adopted us. Arnold became my dad's son. I watched my dad lose his mother, younger brother, and many friends. But the first time I ever saw him cry was when that cat passed away. They reveal a love in our hearts we didn't know we even had!

My dad was the same. No cats! The day we got a kitten, he kept his distance. Within two weeks, he was begining to warm up.
Ten years later, they are best friends. He's a keen gardner and she will sit with him for hours out there, and will sit on his lap when he watches TV. He talks to her like she's one of his kids. He still grumbles, but always with love. When she doesn't wake him up in the morning or he hasn't seen her for a few hours he gets worried.
My dad is genuinely a big softy and I'm glad our adopted family member could bring that side out of him more
