Meet the 19-year-old running for city council

She may be only 19 years old, but she's looking to bring young energy to Toronto city council. Melissa Nakhavoly speaks with Hope Schrier, the youngest person running in the municipal election.

I know her in real life, she's inspired me to vote against her.

Her confidence in running is commendable, but she lacks life experience. 25 would be a reasonable age for a young person to run. Enough time to pay rent for a few years, attempt to buy land, file taxes more than twice, graduate school, you know basic adult stuff.

Is the station giving equal time to all running for mayor or just this person?

We do need more young people in elected politics (under 35s are a heavily underrepresented group deserving of representation in all three levels of government). However, I wish the young kids running (you see these types of stories every election) had mentors who could help them deliver more tailored/attractive messages that doesn't make them sound like they just walked out of their Poli Sci 101 class. For instance, I thought her being specific about safety was stronger than the first clip (which sounded like platitudes) but she could've expanded on how she was going to make her district safe. Something like (after talking about her experiences) "I'm going to pressure council and the mayor to hire more police officers/install more cameras/lighting." It sucks this is the way it is, but that's the way it is and any person (especially a young person) who decides to put their name forward deserves all the credit in the world but since young people don't vote, if you can't bring them to the polls, you have to tailor your message to the 35+ and older people who are voting and so you have to (unfortunately?) sound more "serious, "
