Just wanted to share my method with you because I haven't heard of anyone else using it. It's not proper, but it works for me, even with size 20 crochet threads.
First off, I am totally blind and completely self-taught, which is probably why I do things the way I do.
To hold the hook I do something similar to the knife hold. The grip is near my middle finger and my thumb and index finger are up near the throat of the hook because I use them to pull the yarn over the hook. If I understand it right, usually, people don't touch the yarn and are somehow able to pull the loops through without them coming off the hook, correct?...
I've never been able to do it without touching my yarn. The loop already on my hook never wants to come off, but my yarn-over does every time. lol
I hold my yarn in a similar way to my crochet hook. It goes under my pinky, ring and middle fingers, then it gets guided between my index finger and thumb.
Just thought I'd share that.

Thank you so much for this! I haven’t crocheted in a while and sometimes you just have to go back to the basics. I’m also working on a project while at home & recovering from surgery and your voice is so soothing!

If anyone’s struggling with the yarn holds Amanda demonstrated - the only way that works for me is to wrap it once around my index finger. I don’t know if I’m a naturally tense person but any other grip is way too tight for me! Try that if you’re having difficulty
