Fable 2 - 2024 Impressions

Talking about my initial experiences with Fable 2 as I move to review the title ahead of the series reboot expected out next year.

This is one of my all time favorite games. Not sure how much of that is nostalgia, but regardless I had SO MUCH FUN with this back in the day on X360

Man! The soundtrack on this one is just amazing. That’s why it’s my favorite of the trilogy.

a big part of this games magic for me was the online aspect, it essentially had trade chat, people on xbox 360 would talk shit and beef with each other in bowerstone. People in the zones would also be willing to help you through the challenges and find secrets with you. I dont think playing through this game by myself would be anywhere near as fun.

i loved time magic in this, cause it is just a buff to using weapons.
bullet time + short blink teleports that give a melee weapon buff

I enjoyed the Magic system a lot back in the day. It gets better the more points you put into it because of two things. The charge speed gets a lot faster later on, to the point that you're charging for a second and you're already on lvl 3-4 iirc. Secondly, with every new level you, kind of, get another magic slot increasing your repertoire of available spells. You can hot swap them too ofc.
The Charge system is quite unique and i liked the way it felt in combat. However i also havent played fable 2 in a long time either, my view of it may be 90% nostalgia. I also remember that it was possible to easily break the combat since some spells were just absolutely OP on lvl 5. Either way hope you have at least a little bit of fun with it.^^

Really? For me, 3 was the worst…just a complete dumpster fire. I liked 2 the best…but the end was kind of weak.

I’ll never forget Fable 2 because I stupidly destroyed my copy while moving my xbox while the game was running.

I've played through Fable 2 on PC last year. XBOX cloud streaming is honestly terrible. I've got a pretty fast internet, yet I was struggling to get stable 30fps and the game looked like it was running in 480p resolution.

What did save me was Microsoft Edge Canary. Basically Microsoft made a browser version that has the function of "boosting" the performance of XBOX streaming service. And it works! The performance nor quality were amazing, mind you, but it was fully playable without feeling like my eyes were about to start bleeding.

I think the magic was a very console centric design. I remember the concept being that melee, ranged and magic all had their dedicated buttons for the sake of simplicity. The console version of Fable 1 had an interface that was a bit intimidating, pulling a trigger and pressing y to scroll through different spells. Now I can really embrace that system, but I don't think I used much magic when I was younger and Fable 2 seemed to want to have a wider appeal in terms of life sim elements, which I think really holds up.

Never played any fable past 1, but I remember that 2nd was considered the best in the series. Why it never got ported to PC is beyond me.

I remember really liking the story, and this being my favorite. There are a few points where you have to make a decision and it really affects your character.

I recently started this one after finishing the first as well. It has a high standard to meet because it's hyped up by my handful of friends to play the entire series as an unambiguous gem, clearly the best in the series. I don't know if it's there but I'm excited to find out.

Ive found most peoples enjoyment for fable usually comes down to nostalgia. I played 1 and 3 way more growing up so I love both of them but I have a much harder time playing 2 because of my lack of nostalgia for it.

I never actually got into this game. Loved Fable 1 as a kid though. Interested to see the full review to see what changed.

I wish there were more "fantasy life simulators" out there. I'm hoping Wayward Realms scratches that itch somewhat whenever it comes out.
