Guys in charge of looking after the bulb

“I don’t do anything”

When they realise they made them a little too good, they stop making them like they used to.

just a friendly reminder that GE, Philips, and other manufacturers have a written agreement to make sure this never happens again.

Made during the time when, until 50 - 60 years ago, companies cared about and were recognized for quality. Items were built to last.

Proof the lightbulb industry knowingly makes less efficient bulbs to make more money.

Imagine if it actually burns for another 100 years. The bulb will outlive us all. Long live this bulb 💡 😂

It’s also burning very dimly, reducing the stress on the tungsten filament.

On the property where I grew up (1990s) there was a barn that was roughly 80 or a bit more years old. The house was 100yo, original Barn had burned down. In the barn there was one string of lights that ran down an aisle along one side of the barn, passed a couple old draft horse tie stalls and milking stanchions. On it there was one I'm assuming original light bulb. To this day I have never seen another light bulb quite like it. Every year or two I'd have to replace one of the other light bulbs, all of them were modern.... that one old light bulb was still going strong when my parents sold the place somewhere around 2005. Honestly that light bulb is kind of the reason I want to go back and see that old barn. Even as a kid I seemed to look at that old light bulb with a bit of reverence and awe😊 yeah in many ways you don't appreciate the depths of historical things until you're older, but I always seemed to know there was something very special about that light bulb. ❤

Don't turn it off. Leaving it on and not cycling the element through hot/cold cycles is one reason it still works.

They used to make bulbs that last for a very long time however, companies quickly realized that people will stop buying bulbs because the ones they have now weren't going out, so they started manufacturing them to have a life expectancy so you'll have to buy more.

Light bulbs aren't the only thing manufactured to fail at some point.

All of the first lightbulbs manufactured never burnt out. The idea to make lightbulbs that don’t last was for purely for money. The Phoebus Cartel was a group of manufacturers consisting of GE and Philips among many others. Important part of history that we should all know.

I absolutely do not believe they never once experienced a power outage...

The manufacturers got together and agreed to put a stop to those.

Exactly why they don't build bulbs like these anymore. We'd never spend our money again on bulbs If we had such bulbs

Because there wouldn't be any demand for light bulbs if they lasted forever.

I was happy to see yesterday that our lightbulb in a workshop which was installed ca. 40 years ago still works.

By being left switched on, the element hasn’t been subject to the thermal stresses of being switched on and off. That’s probably why the element hasn’t broken, the main reason for incandescent bulb failure.

I was watching a video about why lightbulbs don’t burn like that anymore, because the main company’s that sold the light bulbs were losing money for they made them burn less on purpose so people would have to buy more
