We loved that tank. It was about 400m from where I live, and was always fun to surprise friends with on a walk. The owner put in benches and a table in the last 10 years so you could sit and ponder how amazing it was. Very sad to see it gone.

For the people wondering, "Stompie" was removed by its owner in 2022 for restoration. He felt that the graffiti (often times painted without his permission) covering the tank was disrespectful and may end up damaging it's historical preservation as not only a WW2 tank, but also one of many tanks used in the Prague Spring uprising. He may not put the tank back in its former place after restoration is complete.
Stompie's removal had nothing to do with the ongoing Ukrainian invasion, or even because he was embarrassing the government, he just wanted people to stop painting the tank. It has since been replaced by a miniature house/art project protesting housing prices in the UK.

I used to pass the tank every day when I worked nearby. The story behind it is exactly as told in the video. Near Gatwick Airport another man started parking historic aircraft on his abandoned chicken farm after the council refused a planning application. He had about 20 at one time.

Fun fact: the name "tank" used to call armored vehicles actually came from the first tank. In WW1, some British had an idea to make the first tank but covered the prototype in tarp that says "tank" (they meant water tank) to avoid the enemy knowing.

I studied architecture here in the UK and let me tell you, getting permission to build on land you own is more of a headache than designing and getting the building up. They have strict rules on what can be built and where.
