Human nature is so consistent that books written hundreds of years ago are still relevant to us today

Willpower being desire as opposed to some weird "mind strength" makes so much sense. I don't think of myself as somebody with willpower, I struggle to wake up and go to the gym, but it's so easy for me to "resist" unnecessary purchases. The secret is that I'm not resisting anything, my desire to achieve my long term financial goals is just 10x stronger than my desire to buy an overpriced coffee or pizza or shoes or partying. My long term goals are just on my head 24/7, I'm excited thinking about when I will get to achieve them, they already give me joy just knowing I'm working towards them. I just want them SO badly.

“You have to act like the person you want to be, before you feel like them”

This quote from the Mel Robbins Podcast has stuck with me ever since I heard it. I had to think of it wenn the talk about desired character started.

I hate that I’ve reached my fitness goals so many times throughout my life yet once I’ve hit the goal I slip back into bad habits. I’ve never had an issue working out, but I do struggle with eating healthy. My biggest weakness. I need to remember the instant gratification of eating some delicious treat is going to ultimately sideline my delayed goal of maintaining the level of fitness I wish to keep. Thanks for the video—excellent advice.

Thanks! Please don't stop these videos. They might be a tad less popular than other more pop topics but I find them so valuable. I appreciate your time and effort Kiana. Looking great by the way :D

I will be sure to read this, after your last recommendation “Ultra-Processed People” became one of my favorite books of all time

This is a super odd suggestion, because you don't smoke cigs, and prob never did...but about 10 years ago I read Allan Carr's "Easy Way to Stop Smoking" and after finishing that book, never picked up a cigarette again. I think he might give you some interesting ideas on how to reframe the idea of "sacrifices." I had to stop looking at quitting smoking as a sacrifice, and reframe it as not giving anything up, while pairing it with the idea of what I was gaining. Anyway, between that book and this video I'm going to become unstoppable. Cheers!

All the sacrifices for my goal can be summed up under "sugar" and "short-term satisfaction". Looking at it from that angle helped a lot!

I never managed to stick to a diet for more than a week... until one day I ate a high protein breakfast and had huge energy for the rest of the day. I was able to focus better and got loads done. And I attributed it to the breakfast of toast and eggs. So I thought I would eat eggs for breakfast the next day too, to see if it had been a coincidence, or if my brain just really loved eggs. And again, I had a great day. And now it's been 4 months. I've eaten my eggs on toast about 90% of the days since then. I've lost 35 lbs unintentionally, and I've gotten SO MUCH DONE.
And when I look at it from the lens of desire, dieting to be thinner or even healthier was never a huge driver for me. But dieting to have more focus? That is something I would do a lot to achieve. Just eating eggs for breakfast everyday? That's easy.

I am sorry for your recent devastating house fire; it is wonderful news that you all survived.
Linking this video to that one, i want to remind you that your health can one day go up in flames like your house did, with no chance to "say goodbye." Menopause muscle loss+surgical complications+a year of fighting cancer had limited my abilities in so many soul sucking ways. Now its not just a matter of setting my mind to something and having willpower...now it's about if I have the ability. I am down but not out...but self-improvement is much more difficult than it used to be.t

I needed this very badly, thank you. I'll be purchasing a copy of this book as soon as I'm able, I could get lost in his prose.

I have such a hard time watching these videos because they’re so very relevant to my goals in life. Thinking about them stresses me out sometimes, and I have the bad habit of avoiding it! Gotta keep at it though

I've used your discipline and willpower videos to change careers from pharmacist to data engineer. Train daily towards a 2 hour half marathon as well as obtaining a feeling of freedom through discipline

This may have been one of your best videos yet! I have never thought of will being this way, yet now it feels blatantly obvious. I hadn't realised that by not keeping my own word, I am dishonoring myself.

Having some power over oneself is paramount. Without power to sustain from activities we know all too well are detrimental to being, we find ourselves obscured on a dark path akin to being lost in the wilderness. Please keep making positive content we need more creators like yourself

Love it. Helps to reframe and define what willpower actually means. I feel like this video will pop into my head often over the next week.
