I've spent some time getting hands-on with the ASUS Vivobook S 15 - equipped with Qualcomm's Snapdragon X Elite chip, and running Windows on ARM.

Can it live up to the hype and expectations?

I bought one of these from Costco and have been benchmarking this against my other laptops based on the AMD 7940hs and Intel 1360p. Where this really shines is it can still run the processor at full speed off battery only. I get geekbenches of 2460/14300 with it plugged in and when it is battery. My AMD goes from 2470/12700 when plugged in down to 2297/8970 on battery even when I set performance to max. It just loses 33% on battery. Meanwhile Intel goes from 2340/10100 down to 2340/7980. Gpu wise, the Snapdragon gpu is unremarkable post 20100 score which is the same as the Iris Xe on the Intel.

I don‘t think that I will ever buy a device like this. And yes, the reason is Windows. 😁

With the AMD and Lunar Lake versions already released or set to release soon, I suggest opting for them over the X-Elite. They offer superior performance in several aspects. Both devices feature OLED displays, making them a more relevant comparison than the MB Air when pitting Windows against Windows.

I own the Surface Laptop 7 (I prefer LCD to OLED for office work), which has encountered freezing issues with specific applications, including Edge. Additionally, compatibility problems persist with my VPN and Google Drive. While it’s a solid device for the right user, the Surface Laptop 7 falls short compared to AMD and Intel machines. These machines boast more powerful GPUs, eliminate compatibility issues, and offer comparable efficiency. Once fully released, their prices are expected to compete with those of Snapdragon due to their need to be competitive.

Regarding the MB Air, with the discounts on the M3 MB Pros offered by third-party resellers, the Vivobook is more comparable with the Pro models (also the display size). I recently saw the MB Air from B&H for $1099, which included 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage. While Apple competes in this market, it requires purchasing outside the Apple Store, as Apple discounts are exclusively available with other retailers.

Sorry to say, but I think you are biased if you use only Windows and Mac and no Linux.
