The Twisted Story of the Guianas

Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana once were collectively known as the Guianas, a territory that also comprised areas of modern-day Venezuela and Brazil. They are an oddity in the America's. They're not latino, they don't speak Spanish or Portuguese, and they have a highly diverse population.

But they also inherited a messy network of disputed borders from their colonial past, and tensions are increasing now that Venezuela is claiming large parts of Guyana's territory, and are building up their military presence in the region.

While the Guianas are the "weirdos" on the continent, they are in fact classified as culturally Caribbean nations. Both Guyana (GY) and Suriname (SR) are members of CARICOM, the EU equivalent of the Caribbean. They're also members of the CSME that works similar to Schengen. French Guiana (FR) has expressed interest to join CARICOM, just like how Martinique will probably join this year. France has said it shouldn't be a problem, we'll see how that plays out.

Furthermore, most of the pictures you used when talking about GY, were actually of SR. About the demographics of Suriname, the "blacks" are maroons. The Creoles are also classified as "black" in Suriname. They fall under the Afro-Surinamese umbrella, but they're two separate ethnic groups.

Suriname also had Chinese indentured servants way before slavery ended. Also, from madeira. And the "white" population of Suriname aren't really the Europeans that colonized, they're descendants of Dutch Farmers that were also treated badly by the Dutch colonizers.

It also seemed that halfway through the video it was more about GY and GY's relationship with Venezuela than it was about the Guianas as a whole.

Other than that great video.

we in Guyana are not worried about the the failed and starving state invadeing, its not so easy to invade Guyana as you all think, Guyana is not ukrine where there is flat fields and you just walk over, there is a massive forest and the only way is by boat and you have to land at a port where there are roads, and guess what will be waiting for the invaders? small ambush units all over the place and guess who will sink the boats? but it gets better if Venezuela is in essicreibo and the GDF can kill more as they have to drive on the highways, and build bases so Guess what will happen ?, hundreds of small ambushes., plus they have to bring ammo and food from venezuela and guess what will happen ? to feed 100 000 thousand men is a logistical nightmare.

Correction:
In fact there IS NO DISPUTE over the border with Suriname.
The Upper-Corantijn river at the West of that so called TIGRI triangle is about 4 (!) times bigger than the Curuniriver at the East of the territorial triangle between Suriname and Guyana.

The width of those two Rivers differ more than 8x (800%!) ... and every Guyanese know that geographical, hydrological and geological fact, as did The Colonial Masters UK back then.

But they still, until now today, persist in their own lies, misinformation and manipulation of the public view of the world.

UK and Guyana, can you please stop with your nonsense and be good honorable neighbors for once?

Muchas Gracias

As a proud Surinamese, I can tell you that most of us do not recognize this map you're using. We believe the parts taken from us are ours.

I find it interesting that, when discussing these areas, everyone ignores that huge Brazilian protuberance between Venezuela and Guyana. Brazil annexed this area from Venezuela in 1905. You'd think Venezuela would be just as eager to recover this part of its territory as it is the territory it says the English stole from them. But obviously Brazil is a much tougher foe than Guyana, and there is no oil in that part of the Guiana Shield.

The Venezuelans have a case, but it's important to recognize the timing of this possible conflict. The Venezuelan narco-socialist dictatorship is about to lose it's grip on the country and they are deperate to halt the elections.

Whatever maybe the colonial misgivings, Venezuela has no rights to annex its claimed territory in Guyana. Its claim is purely driven by greed after hearing oil discovery!

The map of Suriname is not correct! Tigri belongs to Suriname and not to Guyana!
