Fun Fact: Apple just changed it, they made 16gb ram default on the M2 and M3 MacBook. You can no longer purchase 8gb ram.

It is possible maybe this RAM upgrade has something to do with the upcoming Apple Intelligence and not with major performance upgrade! 🤔

I have the MacBook Air M3, 512GIG with 8GIG RAM, I opened 5 Word documents with heavy diagrams, 4 Excel Sheets, Logic Pro, Outlook and most of the apps on my Mac with 15 Safari tabs, navigated between all the documents and tabs with no hassle at all, memory pressure stayed orange and nothing was slow (that I could notice), MacBook was snappy as hell, just my experience.

the point of having more ram is to have more files and apps open without slowing things down...or for things like audio production, having more virtual instruments and audio plugins running with a projects

Does EXTRA RAM make a difference for your needs?

8GB is all i need. Had the 8GB since launch and seeing a new product doesn't make my rig any slower.

For casual browsing, reading and some notes, I have the iPad... but since my work consists of graphic design and photo editing, I really can't be comfortable with 8GB. I always had to bump it up even if people are saying an 8GB Mac is really better performing than an 8GB Intel and that Macs are more efficient with their handling of memory. Here's the thing, every computer I bought stays with me for 5 years or more. And now with Apple bumping up the newer Macs to 16GB because apparently their heavily marketed Apple Intelligence is going to need that much to run optimally on 16GB... well, even if I doubt Apple Intelligence will be of use in the next couple of years, it's good to know one has enough buffer with both memory and storage. :)

The thing that people forget is that the GPU and CPU share the memory. So even 16GB is more like 12 GB (or less) if comparing to a computer with a GPU with 4 GB of memory. My 2015 27" iMac has 24 GB memory and 4 GB for GPU which is a total of 28 GB.

Going forward I wouldn't get a new mac with less than about 32 GB of memory.

In my country you have to pay over 500 dollars for jumping to 16gb! Being a student I’m very happy with m3 8gb

Multitasking will be better with 16GB RAM, for me i always do multitask and i also don't like to be handicapped with less RAM for me i would any go with more RAM and now in same price it's great, Apple finally listened to its customers..

One thing I noted, In the multitasking export test, the 8gb uses the swap file, therefore putting pressure and wear on the SSD. And those are at premium price at Apple. So save your SSD and get the 16gb.

The real problem is that they thought it's okay to have 8 gigs of RAM in a 1000$ laptop in 2023/24
