What does a fox mating call sound like?

If you hear an unearthly scream in the dead of night, hopefully it's just a fox. Most of the time, foxes don't make a lot of noise, but when they do, it can be scary. In the mating season both males and females can be very loud. The males call to announce their presence and to warn off competing males in the area, and a vixen screams to attract mates.

hearing this at 5am in the silence of night is horrible... I had to come here to confirm it was foxes calling but I was worried it sounded more like another animal crying in agony while being eaten alive by a fox

A fox was in my yard so I just played this hoping it'd come back, now my neighbors probably think I'm torturing puppies over here.

Less than five minutes after I played this my regular fox visitor showed up like he was coming to dinner late 🤣 I leave eggs n raw beef scraps from my butcher a few times a week and the fox takes care of the pests in my woodlot. I hadn't seen them two this winter but the tracks are around so I guess our timing is different than last year.

I live up in the mountains and could not figure out what this was. At first I thought it was a distressed deer so I came out n the middle of the night and freezing cold saying “it’s okay, where are you?” That was when my neighbor said it was either a mountain lion or fox looking to get some action, I’m retry sure it was the fox thanks to your video. Scary sounds in the dark if night.

Oh God I just got up in the middle of the night drove around to see if I could see what this was. I was so upset thinking there was an animal in distress needing help but just a fox in heat. Sending love to it and hope it finds it's little soulmate.
