Did you know Canada shares a border with Europe? How is this possible? The answer lies in the frigid waters of the Arctic. Denmark owns Greenland, an enormous island that sits tantalizingly close to Canada's northern territories. When these two nations established their maritime borders, they encountered an unexpected complication: a tiny, uninhabited rock called Hans Island.
For over five decades, Hans Island was at the centre of a friendly but persistent dispute. Both Canada and Denmark claimed full ownership of this 1.3-square-kilometer chunk of barren rock, leading to a peculiar 'whisky war.' Each nation would periodically visit the island, remove the other country's flag, plant their own, and leave a bottle of spirits for the other side to enjoy.
In a landmark decision in 2022, Canada and Denmark finally reached an agreement. They chose to split Hans Island almost evenly down the middle, creating a land border between the two countries. This resolution not only ended one of the world's most cordial territorial disputes but also gave Canada the distinction of sharing land borders with two nations.
