First developed in revolutionary France, today the metric system is used in many parts of the world and throughout the global scientific community.

Unit of measurements such as kilogram and meter is preferred instead of imperial measurement system. But why is it preferred to the imperial system? Why the meter, kilogram, second, ampere, or kelvin is preferred as base units?

We answer this crucial question along with defining what the metric system really is.

“In many parts of the world” literally like 95% of the world uses it. You make it sound like its 50/50.

(0:35) People keep saying Myanmar uses imperial units; but as far as I know, the most common units there are their traditional units. So for what I can see, people take "doesn't use metric" to mean "uses imperial", but that wouldn't be the case.

North Korea is slow at adopting metric too; while it's official; small regional industries are still using traditional units a lot.

46 years old From the UK I get mixed up a lot but can generally use both my son who is 16 uses only metric my father 67 uses both and my grandfather 87 used something I never understood whatsoever working with him was a nightmare for me but my dad understood him no problems so I guess it takes a few generations to faze out America and the UK better get to it if they want to catch up with the rest of the world

I use a bit of both but definitely calculating in metric is easier.

I love the way the video is produced and the way the explanation is conducted. These are simply the great things to be appreciated.

The content in this video is fantastic! I wish we could use it in classrooms, but in the last few seconds of the video, "To the metric system!" with a shot, means I cannot approve it or link it as a resource for the units I am writing for my school district. Would you consider deleting those last few seconds of your video? I know I can get around it by editing out the last few seconds myself, but then it does not link back here, where teachers would notice and maybe subscribe to Interesting Engineering. Thanks for considering my request. I would really love for teachers to notice your videos because I bet they would love some of them and use them.

Liberia and Myanmar recognize that the metric system is the way to go.
The US are still using Flintstones, while the rest of the world are using AC.
America first my friends, go ahead! LOL

There is a great deal of metric usage in the United States. The difference between the US and countries which are entirely metric is that we don’t coerce our citizens to use only metric units. We are officially bimetral.
