In today's #shortsvideo I discuss the criteria for #narcissisticpersonalitydisorder.
Why is everyone talking about narcissists? Are we all narcissists and don’t even know it? In this video I discuss what it means to be a narcissist, and why it might seem like everyone is a narcissist now. So, why is everyone a narcissist now, or so it seems? To be diagnosed with narcissistic personality disorder, or NPD, you have to meet 5 of 9 specific criteria found in the DSM-5. When you know the 9 criteria for narcissistic personality disorder, you have a starting point of understanding the narcissist. However, having the traits of a narcissist doesn’t mean you have the disorder. Why is everyone obsessed with narcissism now? Because we all have some of the traits to some degree and it is easy to think someone is a narcissist because they show some of the signs of narcissism. You may even ask “Am I really the narcissist?” Oftentimes, if you look for something you will find it. Are we all narcissists? No, we aren’t. But we all can act like one sometimes. The person with Narcissistic Personality Disorder shows the criteria for narcissism, or traits, in all settings, throughout their life, and not only in specific settings. Is your partner giving you silent treatment in relationships? Do you find you have to use the grey rock method narcissists don’t like as a way to keep separate from the narcissist? These are definitely reasons to be considered someone is a narcissist but it doesn’t mean they ARE a narcissist. So, should we stop calling everyone a narcissist? Yes, if you are saying they have the disorder, but not if you want to communicate your shared experience but aren’t implying the person has a mental health disorder. Everyone is talking about narcissism because it is a way to connect with others. Why is everyone obsessed with narcissism? Because it is talked about across social media and it is hard to get away from.
