Rear Leg Triangle Choke in College Wrestling - Draping Leg Scissors

Can you use a rear leg triangle choke in college wrestling?! The answer is YES and NO.⁣

You probably guessed it, NO to the choke part. You cannot apply any type of pressure or choke to your opponents throat or neck with your legs in a figure 4, scissors, or squeezing position.⁣

YES, to the leg triangle part if you Jiu Jitsu folks can modify the “triangle”.⁣

There was some controversy about this position so I talked to the referee myself to learn more after the match. FYI- In the first two videos you can see the referee after the first back point swipe move his gaze from my opponents back to look at my legs and check if they are legal. ⁣

The reason this was not illegal is because:⁣

1. My legs were not a figure 4 (locked up triangle with shin in knee pit) This would be a choke. ⁣
2. My legs were in a “draping leg scissors.” You can see my feet crossed and my knees are completely open. I am applying zero illegal choking pressure during this turn.⁣
3. My draping leg scissors is very deep down the body and not directly around just the neck.⁣

How did we get here?

1. Off the whistle from top I have a head and arm grip (seatbelt in Jiu Jitsu) and I pull him back to throw in my legs. His right arm hooks around my right leg as we fall back. ⁣Not good news for me.
2. I keep my seatbelt grip as tight as I can as my right leg rides all the way up from his arm to his shoulder. I am very high up now and close to getting reversed. *This is also rear triangle choke territory in Jiu Jitsu. ⁣
3. The draping leg scissors are locked in and I use my left hand to grab his left elbow and pull it towards my body and up/away to turn him to his back. Just like in Jiu Jitsu you would pull their arm up closer to their neck/head and away from their body to then lock in the rear triangle across the neck. Once he is on his back I am trying to pull his left elbow up towards me as HARD as I can to prevent him from rolling back to his right and to prevent him from being able to come up onto that left arm if he rolled left. Then comes to bail out so I don’t give up 2 for a reversal. ⁣

This turn won the match for me. The score was 2-2 going into the third period he chose bottom. At the end of this sequence once we got back to neutral (our feet) it was 4-3.⁣

I would NOT recommend this as a “go to” technique from top as it puts yourself in a very dangerous and vulnerable position to get reversed. I would educate yourself on this as a contingency plan if your opponent is able to underhook one of your legs while riding on top and you are about the get reversed. Better to get reversed trying then just give it up (depending on the match situation).
