That's so weird, because I hate photographing in overcast conditions😅 I do reptile photography, and find that direct sunlight makes it way easier

As a wedding photographer, I prefer overcast skies to soften the light, reduce dynamic range, and stop the subjects from squinting, which is not a good look for a bride.

Sunrise/sunset light is for sure the best light in my opinion

I would also add that softer lighting is more flattering for people, but harsher light can be a lot more dramatic. Really depends on the vibe too 🍻

As a photographer- I think it’s the most boring lighting. A hard shadow tells a story, a soft and diffuse splash of light does too- but both should be used with a plan, not just because they’re there. Too often, internet pointers get into our heads and we lose the artistry that comes with photo - I struggle with it myself sometimes.

Rad work man, I’m always glad to see you in my feed. You take a levelheaded approach to photo, and you inspire so many to get into the art.

I usually prefer it when the sun's out. I find the hard shadows pleasing

Hard shadows are great for architectural photography. They give dimension to the architecture.

As a solely black and white film and plate photographer prefer a clear day just before sunset as it casts the best shadow and gives the best tones in my opinion

this is a portrait photographer thang were you need even lighting for the subjects themselves to look good.
but for peeps like street photographers often really work into that harsh light because they don't have a specific look in mind just to get a 'good' shot.
just like using paint; sometimes acrylics suck really hard and sometimes they work really good it's just a personal style thing

My favorite scenes are just a tad cloudy. With those fluffy fuzzy wispy guys way high up. It’s a blanket of fluff. Those look great during sunsets. High clouds that are kinda transparent look great. And after a wildfire is when the sun gets wacky colors that are awesome

So therefore it's the best light as it works best for most situations

I'm more of an overcast avoider, as I absolutely love to play with direct sunlight and the effects it can bring. 😄

cloudy is best for photogrammetry for sure though

Overcast isn't considered the best lightning, just the most flattering for people (because it is). It doesn't cast harsh shadows, people never have to squint, and it helps hide blemishes etc

Learning how to read light and making the correct adjustments whether that be moving to the dark side shooting into the light and vice versa or waiting til your subject reaches a point where they’re lit is all you gotta know and practice cause regardless of lighting condition, you’ll know exactly where you have to be when you make the shot. Videos by Steve McCurry, Ralph Gibson and Dan Milnor are all easily accessible and there’s this book; Workers by Sebastiao Salgado, which taught me how to shoot into direct sunlight which I thought was fantastic.

I'd probably add that it's "harder" in direct light due to the limitations on your cameras dynamic range.
