So here are 10 works in the Canon of English literature that, in my opinion, have had perhaps the most significant impact on further literature.

Though the King James translation of the Bible does not fall into the category of fiction, it's impact is just too enormous to leave it out.

Look out for an upcoming video that will dive into this list more thoroughly.

All of them are on my shelves and English is not my first language, so they are definitely influential. ❤ I'm reading David Copperfield right now and Beowulf was one of the two books I've read twice this year, along with the Epistle of Paul to the Romans... 😄

Interesting. I don't see Utopia mentioned much these days.

I’ve just purchased Utopia, thanks to you. I have also had a “come to Jesus” moment when it comes to classics and reading in general. For so many years I got caught in this mentality of reading as much as possible and felt so disappointed when I couldn’t meet my goal or simply meeting it but feeling let down on the quality of the literature itself. Thank you for inspiring me on picking up classics again and picking quality over quantity. I’m currently reading “A room with a view” and it has been a most enjoyable read, even made me chuckle a few times. Quite refreshing. Great channel! Hope you have a fantastic weekend!

Do you have a particular translation of Beowulf you would recommend? Especially for those of us who don't read a ton of classical literature?

Check! Good list. Thank you. David Copperfield is still my favorite Dickens of all 16. I read the Bible every day. It blows them all out of the water. God bless.

Thank you for this list. love your channel. I'm just reading Chekov now and will tackle Middlemarch next. I'm intrigued to see the Holy Bible on your list, too. :) I only read the King James version, having read it right through twice. What's your preferred version?

By “English”, I thought you meant “British”. But then there was Moby Dick, an American book, in English.

Dickens has to be on the list, but I wouldn't have chosen David Copperfield. I would have gone with A Christmas Carol or The Pickwick Papers.

Why is the bible in ENGLISH literature? I'd say it's more WORLD literature…. What do you guys think?

almost everybody in the comments have a valid point against this guy short video of 10 greatest books in english literature, which tells you a little about the author of the video and the video itself, and by the way this guy is not the guy that owns the youtube channel, is a random guy who made a random id with what follows aftertristan and the classic available number, and of course he cant publish under his own name, like true people do, becauseof course anonimity is preferable, and bears no responsibility, its greatest quality

I'd say take out Utopia and put in The Faerie Queene.

That's a bold (yet safe) claim, Tristan. Although David Copperfield isn't even the greatest Dickens novel, much less one of the uber-10. :-)

Two of the ten are not English until translated. One is American, so depends on what you mean by “English Literature” there as well.

Not quite sure why people like Pride and Prejudice so much. I would personally prefer Emma any day over it.

The Holy Bible, a great work of English literature ? Right....

The King James Version is a bad translation of the original Hebrew. The Nun’s Tale is antisemitic. So is the Merchant of Venice, The hath not a Jews eyes speech is gaslighting and it doesn’t make it less antisemitic.
