Coming from an English Football fan, great explanation

However, there's one thing important to note when looking at the whole system
Promotion isn't just as simple as the top few teams getting promoted
We have a system of automatic promotion and play-offs
Let me explain with an example
I support Bristol Rovers, we're in League One, but we just got promoted from League Two
In League Two, there's 4 promotion spots (the amount of promotion spots also varies by League, it can be as little as 2)
But only the top 3 go up automatically
We finished in 3rd which meant we did go up automatically, but if we finished in 4th we would've been in the play-offs
Basically the next 4 teams go into the play-offs (so for L2 4th-7th)
The highest team plays the lowest, the middle two play in the semi-final, which has 2 legs
Then the winners go onto the final, which if it's in one of the EFL Leagues would be held at Wembley (the national stadium if anyone didn't know)
The winner gets promoted
So in L2 you could finish lower than 4th and still get promoted (this season the play-offs were won by 5th)
Not too important to know if you only plan on following the Prem but if you want to become a fan of English football more broadly or even support a lower level team this is important to know

You mustn't call clubs at lower levels insignificant. These clubs may attract less than 1000 fans but they are very important to their fans and the community. Non league football is an absolute joy for a really genuine football experience. Premier League fans may also follow a club in the lower leagues.

I am an American born Anglophile, one parent was born and raised in England the other born and raised in a British Commonwealth nation. I love watching English Premier league football when it is shown over here. But I never fully understood it. I knew the basic terms and things like relegation and promotion, but there were many things I either learned in this video or that were more succinctly explained. Definitely well worth just a little under five minutes of my time.

This is just for my own enjoyment of the sport, no gambling or anything involved. I love my American sports, but I want to be more familiar with the British football system. I especially appreciate your tying It into baseball. I know that might confuse or anger our British friends watching this, but it made it clear for me.

I just finished the TV series Ted Lasso and I never really was into soccer/football and learning it for the first time I really got into it and definitely want to learn a little bit more. The whole premier league was confusing it first but this video really helped me understand how everything is set up.

That system should be the standard for all soccer leagues in general, in some countries there is some absurd ways of overcomplicating stuff

The 6th and 7th spots are contingent on the winners of the FA cup and the league cup. If they finish outside of the top five then they, not the 6th or 7th place finishers get the assigned European spot
