Can we install 15A receptacles on a 20A circuit? Sounds like a code violation doesn't it? #wiring #diy

Can a 15A outlet be used on a 20A circuit breaker? Let's take a look at the code book and find out. I have been asked this question several times in the comment .

Here in Southern California, especially on older homes, the wiring is in the attic, and it gets 140 degrees F or more in the summer. We use 12-2 on 15A circuits to avoid overheating of the wire.

You can put a 15 amp duplex receptacle on a 20 amp circuit by NEC.. you cant plug in something that is 15 amps on that circuit. If its a single then it needs to be 20 amp.

A duplex recepticle is multiple recepticles. I hope you know that.

Rambling aside. Yes, you can use a 15amp duplex outlet on a 20amp circuit.

Per the NEC, putting a single duplex 15A on a 20A circuit is perfectly fine and to code. The only time it is not allowed is a SINGLE plug outlet. A single duplex counts as multiple. I'm sure you knew that but the video was just worded funny.

Now I know which wire is 15 and 20 is yellow thank you ❤

If you do; use a heavy duty or commercial grade receptacle.

Always give NEC code reference in your videos

Multiple circuits as let’s say the entire living room outlets, no more than five on a circuit can be on 20 amp circuit with 12 gauge wire. Use 15 amp outlets because they’re cheaper when you are contractor and have to buy like 100 or more of these devices.

It would be good if you knew what you were talking about! You can put 15 or 20 amp duplex receptacles on a 20 amp circuit. You can only put 15 amp receptacles on a 15 amp circuit. You must put a 20 amp receptacle if it is a single receptacle. If duplex, then 15 is acceptable.

I’m thought of you did a 20amp receptacle it had to be a dedicated circuit? But you could do multiple 15Amp receptacles on a 20Amp circuit. That you can’t have multiple 20Amp receptacles on a 20 Amp circuit????

You can't put a 20 amp receptacle on a 15 amp breaker.

How about 15 amp outlets on 20 amp circuit with 14 awg wire

Easy solution to this stupid argument that isn't that costly. Just use a 15 amp receptacle paired with a 15 amp breaker and use a 20 amp receptacle with a 20 amp breaker along with the correct guage wire of course.... 14-2 for 15 amp and 12-2 for 20 amp then no wondering if its safe you'll be fine if you happen to overload the circuit the breaker will trip it's inexpensive common sense. Now everyone shut up about this issue. Lol...😂😂😂

Short answer, don't do it. Do it right.
