First fact is true, the mechanism being referenced is the wheellock, which was popular in the 16th and 17th centuries, ultimately being replaced by the simpler flintlock.

It consisted of a serrated steel wheel that would be wound up and tensioned by a clock-spring. A piece of pyrite would be clamped in the striker arm and then lowered against the wheel. Upon being triggered, the wheel would spin, creating the sparks which lit the gunpowder.

Another fun fact you may not know is that lighters were invented before matches were.

The essential tool part refers to the fact that most people smoked back then, the common soldier wasn’t using his lighter to set shit on fire unless it’s a special circumstance or they work in the mess

Interestingly nafta is actually a word in Ukrainian for oil (the one gasoline is mate from). Probably it is also used in some different languages.

If you want to know more he may be refering to the wheel or flintlock, both used mechanism to rub metal against a flint, they came from the 16/1700s and would be easier to use than matchlocks which used a trigger to slam slow burning match against powder in a side pocket next to the barrel, in all three whether the powder is ignited by the heat or sparks the flame of it goes through a small hole leading from the pan to the breech of the gun setting off the powder the flintlock (developed later) swung the flint and scraped it against the frizzen, the wheel lock rapidly spun a metal disc which is wound up before firing which is scraping against the flint which is held against the wheel by the mechanism
