Airlines search for the perfect plane seat

U.S. airlines are expected to fly 47.5 million people over Christmas and New Year’s. One estimate says up to three million flyers a day will cram into airline seats. While the trend has been for seats to shrink and get closer together, it hasn’t stopped some airlines from devoting years and tens of millions of dollars trying to find their perfect seat. Kris Van Cleave reports.

Each weekday morning, "CBS This Morning" co-hosts Gayle King, Anthony Mason and Tony Dokoupil deliver two hours of original reporting, breaking news and top-level newsmaker interviews in an engaging and informative format that challenges the norm in network morning news programs. The broadcast has earned a prestigious Peabody Award, a Polk Award, four News & Documentary Emmys, three Daytime Emmys and the 2017 Edward R. Murrow Award for Best Newscast. The broadcast was also honored with an Alfred I. duPont-Columbia Award as part of CBS News division-wide coverage of the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. This was a nothing story. Seemed like an ad for Spirit...

The perfect airline seat for an airline is not resembling a seat.

In other news, Spirit airline is performing preliminary testing on standing room only flights. The new design frees up more space, which was formally taken up by seats. The company released a statement reporting "while standing may not be a viable option for all our customers, it provides a economic option and open environment that revolutionizes the flying experience."

The perfect seats for airlines are the kind that fit the most passengers and make the most money. They don’t really care.

The perfect airline seat? Well, it's NOT on a Spirit Airlines airplane, that's for sure! Haha!

I flew on american airlines couple years ago. 2nd time flying over 10 years. I'm 6, 1. I have never been so uncomfortable in my life then that flight. To pay an extra amount just to get the exit row is absolutely ridiculous. My legs fell asleep and I was in pain getting out the plane. It looked like I was trying to learn how to walk for the 2nd time

Spirit’s seats still look uncomfortable.. but I mean you get what you pay for

Did anyone notice how the seats were being installed in the new Spirit plane? Why don't they work from back to front so they don't have to squeeze down the aisle between the seats already installed at the front?

God forbid anything happens, but next plane issue that requires people to evacuate, and they’ll have to reconsider those anchovy cans.

YES! Widen the MIDDLE SEAT and provide partitions to avoid people getting into your space! No one wants that seat on long flights!

Unless you fly first class you seat will be terrible, no mater what airline sardine can your riding in. A lot of first class seats leave a lot to be desired. Bring back the golden days of flying where the customer was well dressed and mannered and the airline really wanted you to fly with them!
