You've definitely been lied to. Everytime I see a "yam" on the internet, I'm like, wait a minute! That's a sweet potato! I live in West Africa and grew up eating yams and they look nothing like that. They are large, brown, hairy on the outside and white and starchy on inside. Thank you for clearing this up, Jerry.

Very very frustrating when an amateur cook outside North America is googling for a REAL YAM recipes but keeps getting sweet potato recipes results, ugh!

This is new to me, ie sweet potatoes as yams. Where I live, we have sweet potatoes in many colours. When we say yam, it is referring to taro, not sweet potatoes.

I’m at Safeway.... they sell 3 types of sweet potato. 1. Sweet white 2. Sweet red 3. Sweet golden.

They taste diffrent and the orange one taste like carrot.They don't eat it in Asia because it tasts bad.
