In Jamaica we use Yellow yam & sweet potatoes but sweet potato is sweet while yellow yam can be nice & dry even semi-dry they are surely different in look & taste.

You’re so right because I am from Brazil 🇧🇷 and my grandmother used to cook yams that used to be found in our yard… good for respiratory problems and even accelerate Amune system..

I've literally had a 30 minute long argument about this at a whole foods once. Those garnet sweet potatoes ain't yams!

I think the confusion comes from a dish called candy yams, but made with Sweet potatoes.

Did you show two different kinds of sweet potatoes? The white flesh and the orange flesh? I think people call the orange flesh sweet potatoes and the white flesh yams, but they’re both sweet potatoes?

And the yams have a very unique flavor. It takes ages to cook too

It just dawned to me that we do have yams in Brazil that look exactly like the one you show (albeit smaller) and we call them inhame, which sounds pretty much like yam 😅

Exactly. When black people from Africa arrived in the USA, they came across the Sweet potato. And it was close enough, so they started calling it a yam and that's where the mixup happened.

Did you buy the yams at a local grocery store or farmers market?
