Is Our New Potato Growing Method Working? | Phase 2 - One Week Update | Guten Yardening

We have entered phase two of our potato sucker experiment where we are trying to grow potatoes using only the suckers from the potato plant.

A week has passed since we place these suckers in three different plastic containers, one containing water, one containing a liquid fertilizer meant to help plants bloom, and one containing a liquid fertilizer meant to help with root growth.

The results of the past 10 days are not really what we expected, and now we find ourselves determining what our next step should be.

In this potato growing update, we show you the results of our experiment so far, and we look forward to your comments and advice.

Thanks for watching.

I think the directions say on fertilizer instructions not to get it on the stem or leaves. I would try putting a sucker directly into soil as if planting a regular plant and fertilize after it starts to grow out around the plant. Of course I'm no expert but they are in the night shade family if I'm not mistaken. I have taken suckers off a tomato plant and put them right in soil and they actually grew and produced tomatoes . Just a thought. Have fun :-):-):-)

I would say similar to Robin, that we wouldn't put fertilizer (we use manure, but same concept) direct on the foliage and I would somewhat say the suckered is a that. Maybe it is to strong for direct contact? I would also try just planting it directly in the soil... Can't wait to see how it works out. Steph

How warm was it where they were stored? Is it possible they need cooler temps like when chitting potatoes?

That is an interesting turn of events! I can only guess but considering the one with no fertilizer did the best I would consider trying just a very weak organic nutrient such as very diluted worm juice or compost tea.

That is an interesting experiment. No roots starting at all, would you have expected roots to form?

Interesting. The first thing I thought was that maybe the solution was too strong. My indoor potatoes have died back and we will be digging them out next week. I’m going to start some more and I’m hoping your experiment holds true and there’s a way to propagate from the stems. That’d be so cool.

Look forward to readinging your comments /responses

Maybe they need a rooting hormone when propagating in water. 🤷‍♀️

I know this for a fact that when you put stuff like fertiliser in a bottle that has no moving water the microbes will start eating it its like wen you put a plant in an aquarium filter and there is no moving water it will do the same think it will go sogy and turn into a goop and smells really bad iv Don it before so wen you put fertilizer you need moving water at all times or the microbes will feed on the plant
