when it comes to plugin Hybrid, Byd is a no brainer. Batter and safer battery tech, way better interior finish and material, better technology and performance. Japanese cars are old school and dated in comparison. I am currently driving a Merc, but my next car will 95% certain be a Chinese, be that Byd, Zeekr or Polstar.

Byd sealine is 4th gen DMI, 1100km. new Byd Seal DMI is 5th Gen. range over 2100km without charge only fuel. Full charge and full fuel is about 2400km

Toyota as usual are taking the piss. The old under powered engine in this new model is a joke. Add in a massive price rise - for basically nothing and they have completed their utter disregard for Australian consumers.

I agree with Scott. I love a plug in hybrid but they need a minimum of 80km - 100km range I reckon. The BYD Sealion 6 sounds very interesting.

When the initial fomo wears off for the new Prado, Toyota will have to drop their prices to get any volume out the door. This is already happening with the GR Corolla, where they are knocking 6k off RRP to move them because their competitors offer cheaper prices and better value. Don't be an early adopter. If we don't pay their prices they have to drop them to reasonable level.

just dropped down my deposit on the BYD sealion 6 AWD. I won’t say how good it’s. It just suits the price……not something you pay over 60K and wait for 2 years…….

Looks great Australia is doing to us what toyota US is doing to their customers. Their build costs are decreasing (I believe these are now being built in thailand) while they treat their potential customers with disdain by jacking up already high prices. Great example of profit before customers.

Toyota is gonna adapt BYD’s DM-i technology. I really can't understand why Prado’s price is going to be increased by $12, 000, why Toyota is so greedy? How long does Toyota want to rip us off ?Just like more competition!Tesla has dropped its price by at least $50k in last few years because of Chinese EV Competition especially from BYD.

Totally agree on the Prado headlights - disappointed we can't get the round headlights in Australia.

Had a look at the Sealion 6 in person and it's quite good actually, seats are comfortable and the build quality looks excellent as well. Having a PHEV that can do 80'ks on a charge is quite compelling for many who can charge it up at home.

Toyota been facing a recall in the USA due to reliability issues with the new V6. Although being related with quality control issues during assembly, I'd avoid this first gen Prado.

What's with the lack of Rear Diff Lock in the GXL (does VX get it?) when the current/old Prado 150 has it?

"Major tech upgrades" by which you mean....you actually get automatic wipers and headlights now!

I own a prado and there is no way in hell its worth paying 20K more for the same features as the everest.

I'm upgrading my new Everest and will eventually have bull bar, driving lights, GVM upgrade, offroad tyres, UHF, long range tank, underbody protection, second battery, drawers, roof rack and awning, and will still have spent less than a new Prado.

Toyota are pricing themselves out of the system in Australia. There are too many better options now.

Nice review. Though i have one highly technical query on BYD Sealion 6. The total output is rated at 238kw of power and 550Nm of torque. I believe this is available when battery is fully charged. However i want to know what happens to power and torque once the battery drops to 25% or less and the engine starts charging the battery..do the power and torque figures still remain the same and does the car still remains as quick as when battery is fully charged? I hope someone here is technically sound enough to answer this. Thnx

The BYD Sealion has been designed by the German and Swiss designers Michele Jauch Paganetti and Wolfgang Egger who formerly served as a head designers for the European luxury car brands Alfa Romeo, Audi and Lamborghini, and currently they design for BYD Auto. And BYD is a number one car in China right now! WV is second, Toyota third!

I think the Outlander PHEV's roomier interior, 7 seats and 10 year warranty does demand a justified price premium. (Can't ignore the made in Japan vs China debate either). However you cut it, it's just good to finally have some competition in this space for consumers and increased choice at different price points...
