Oh yes, the beauty of that trumpet blowing in the beginning of this piece makes it very clear that something new isn’t coming, but the traditional form must needs prevail by perhaps, turning swords into plowshares. As my original ancestor did he retired, and obviously became a farmer. God bless Sergeant Adam Dietrich for that and many another good deed. Fortunately, I have wonderful ways that I have been recognized in the United Kingdom, especially as a lifetime supporter of Earth religions.

Finally, someone gets the ending of this symphony right. Leading up to appx 1:10:00, this is where the final section begins. Virtually every orchestra rushes through this section at a breakneck pace right from the very beginning. It leaves no place for the music to go. The whole idea is to hit those final bars at the breakneck pace. If you start at that pace from the beginning of the section (at 1:10:00), you've already hit your peak speed. No. Gradually build to that speed. In fact, Mr. Nott really slows down the approach in the bars preceding as a musical way of saying, "Brace yourselves: we're about to take a final ride to a rousing finish." The gradual acceleration (Mr. Nott might even have started just a little bit slower) allows listeners to hear every voice in the orchestra, and Mahler was always terrific at giving every instrument and section something to play for listeners to enjoy. You can't hear that if you're playing as fast as many orchestras do. Second, you've built to the end to create that brilliant finish. As the woodwinds and strings slam those descending notes to the final chords driven by the brass, it says, YES, that's how to end this thing! Wish the applause didn't get cut off.

Amazing performance! The Bamberger Symphoniker are wonderful with Jonathan Nott, one of the greatest mahlerian conductor of our time.
All the feelings and the emotions, together with the complex structure of this so rich music, are expressed here very clear and deep. An exciting and moving musical journey❤

Beautiful interpretation: bravo Herr Nott! Very nice balance, rich strings, woodwinds, and kudos to the brass for artistry, smoothness. Not a moment overblown or excessively brassy. High praise also for the solo horn (Herr Eß?): never heard those great solos played better!

Wow. This was fantastic, Bob. Thanks for sharing with us. I loved Nott's accurate, authoritative aplomb! I timed Adagietto at around 9 minutes; a bit too fast for me, the romantic. I like each note caressed with more time and care---but what the heck! It was amazing to be part of this fabulous concert! Kudos!

geniální skladatel narozený v Čechách, v Kališti u Jihlavy Rakouským židovským rodičům, ž části hudebně a mentálně ovlivněn českým prostředím. Ta kombinace se mi jeví jako velmi pro něj inspirativní a tvořivá... Hudba Rakouská a Česká měla vzájemné inspirace, jako i ostatní odvětví života... prostě středoevropané...

Nott shows a profound understanding of this music. The symphony unfolds in an unforced manner with tempi that are just right. Conducting without score allows Nott to be communicative with the orchestra..

@23:57 did tuba or bass play something not in the score?

Mahler was Jewish God of Music, listen to the Violins crying for Peace.

Nott's Adagietto does not hit my emotional hot spot. It's all in the phrasing, and once I was touched by Barbirolli's recording no other interpretation has ever come close.
