Must Know For ANTIBIOTICS
💦 Give diuretics in the morning, not at night (if possible– we can’t change orders!)
But overall, the idea on the NCLEX is to avoid the patient having to urinate all night long (nocturia)
This also increases risk for FALLS!
💦Diuretics are the most commonly used drug for Heart Failure (HF)
Remember HF patients have so much fluid backing up, causing them to be edematous, experience weight gain, fluid in their lungs, and increased girth. Diuretics helps to pull off some of this excess fluid.
💦Monitor the patient's weight (Intervention: Daily Weights)
Same time, scale, clothes
Before breakfast, and before voiding
💦Loop & Thiazide are potassium-wasting diuretics: monitor for hypokalemia
💦Spironolactone is a potassium-sparing diuretic: monitor for hyperkalemia
What medication class does Furosemide fall into?
Is it a potassium-wasting or a potassium-sparing diuretic?

My name is Kristine and I survived nursing school…and you can too!
Nurse In The Making was inspired during my time in nursing school. I immediately struggled and decided to create my own study guides. These guides have helped me personally as well as many others make nursing school just a little more manageable.I hope you find comfort knowing that everyone struggles at times. Nursing school is emotionally and physically draining. I hope these informative, clean, and simple guides help you navigate through all the information because there is A LOT of it in nursing school.
Happy Studying Future Nurses. Don't forget to enjoy the journey!
