I used to buy my plants from a retired sweet potato farmer. When he sold you the plants he gave you very specific instructions on how to grow them. He used only Puerto Rican Reds. . Here's two tips. Moles and shrews hate tomato plant roots. I used to plant a Tommy Toe tomato plant at each end of the row and two plants in the row. Zero rodent damage. When i collected my sweet potatoes I put them on racks in a tiny cottage with the gas heater turned on so room would get to 95 degrees for 15 days. Then they are cured and the sugar is set. All you do is bake them and they are as sweet like they were candied. That's the old fashioned way

i north texas, they grow everywhere in my subdivision, they will take over if you let them. the purple leaves are beautiful

just set a spud on wet sand. sprouts will develope.

I must be super lucky or something because all I do is plant it in the ground and let it grow. I’ve never had a problem doing it this way for years. I get multiple plants that grow and the vine just grows and grows till it takes over everything nearby. My yard is mainly all sand too. They grow great with zero input from me.

i just leave a sweet potato on the counter and it starts to send out shoots. pop them off, put in the soil in a sunny window, let it get roots, plant in beds.
