Thanks, man! Contractors wanted to charge me more than $700 for my side gate/fence, so I'm doing it myself. You covered everything I was concerned about.

It Probably would have been helpful to list the items used in the description

Thank you for your video, it assisted me greatly. I however ended up improving your design. I avoided the strap hinge, and went with a conventional wood post to Steel transition hinge (5/8" pin and 2-3/8 40 guage concrete-filled steel posts) with a male threaded bolt designed to join chain link to wooden posts - BUT USED BACKWARDS. This leaves you NEEDING a FEMALE version of that 2-3/8' post hinge - which they don't manufacture. However, you can buy the male hinge part, grind the weld, put fire on it, pound out the pin and chase it with a 5/8" drill bit for smooth swinging. Now you have the 5/8" female pin receptor for steel post hinge and the male pin-bolt that goes through the 'wooden post' (i.e. your wood fence frame). All my wooden frame is like yours (flat-to face) except the the hidge edge, which is rotated to stand off the fence, so that after drilling the 5/8 hole (for the male bolt), there's still meat on the 2x4. Mine was a much larger dual-gate for RV parking, so I opted for glued half-lap joints, reinforced with screws and 90 degree flat braces on all corners. it worked fantastic, plus the hinge is 100% adjustable ! Thanks for getting me started !

Absolutely brilliant! Thank you for sharing!

Lol... this reminds me of a time when I was helping my best friend with building a railing for his front entrance, and he was racking his brains around how to attach the staircase railing to the upper portion... and then I said "let's go look at the gate hardware!" and sure enough we found brackets that totally did the job, despite that they were not intended for stair railings lol

Thanks so much for the details on where to get those brackets on the cheap. I’ve spent way too much money for them at HD over the years.

I am having a hell of a time finding the hinge strap that fits the post side of the hinge. Every hinge strap I’m seeing has .61 or .71 hole diameter and the hinge is either 5/8 or 3/4 pin.

Thank you had the same issues looking around. You saved me the time figuring it out myself

Nice job. It's not the best hinge, but you're right, that's all you can get for metal to wood gate. You need to install self-tapping sheet metal screws into the bracket on the pole so it doesn't move over the years. It might be best if you through bolt the hinge bracket on the gate with carriage bolts. If the hinge stud falls out over the years you can install a 3/4" bolt with a locking nut.

Thanks for the tip on the clamps $2.50 @Lowes vs $14.75 Home Depot

Man I’m having such a hard time finding these. Every store just sells the stupid regular strap ties. I guess steel tube to wood fence gate is not common at all

Edit: found hinge straps at ACE hardware for 3/4, 5/8 and 1/2 inch. Gonna measure and see if it will work with the Home Depot male hinge strap

thank you so much, bro!....i have a wire gate i need to cover with wood to create privacy. I hope I dont need permit for that. i was worried about connections although had those brackets. as you showed, they dont match. why? because they dont want you to be able to avoid those expensive contractors.
