This is a Met Office UK Weather forecast looking at Storm Lilian on 22/08/2024.

Storm Lilian has been named by the Met Office as the twelfth storm of the season, Lilian will bring strong winds and heavy rain to many northern areas through Thursday night and Friday morning, localised flooding and difficult driving conditions are likely with power cuts possible. You can get storms in any month of the year at these latitudes. Certainly in the West coast of Ireland where I live. All 4 seasons in the one day sometimes. From dead calm to a violent Atlantic squall…just wait 10 minutes.

Thanks for the warning. Many of us likely have experienced worse, but knowing it'll be windy enough to cause a nuisance means we can take precautionary measures to avoid expensive damage. I am undecided over naming storms, however. Numbering by category, month and year would make more sense, but it could be of help for people who do not have much education and need a name to describe them 🤔?

I remember some quite bad storms in the 60’s. If my memory serves me correctly, they were known as STORMS.

Why miles per hour? I know it's what Brits are most used to, but you should really use metres per second, given that it's what most of Europe uses, it's not outdated, and much easier to visualise.
