Yeah, you don't need to halfsword with a one-handed sword for all those bathroom fights.

The Roman Legionaries complained their swords were too short Caesar told them to stand closer to the enemy

someone once Axed me "why do you need an Axe?" i answered "that sounds like the question of someone who does not have an Axe"

Fun fact prisons in England used to be constructed with narrow spiral stairwells to prevent the drawing of swords on the stairs

The trick to getting out of a grapple is to roll above the strength check of your opponent. If you have advantage on your roll, now is the time to use it.

I'd imagine that in a vacuum, a one handed sword would be better so you have the other to try and move around the 0 gravity lol

The free hand allows you to cast spells....

Also 1 handed sword allows for easy deployment in the sword draw after spear combat, was cheaper & easier to manufacture for mass warfare, and gave benefit to tightly spaced formation combat like the gladius provided

There are even more minutiae that go into deciding which sword is better in a specific context, too. The dimensions and shape of the blade, the type of hilt, the exact circumstances one finds themselves in, and so on.

For example, rapiers dominated one-on-one unarmored duels in their day because reach and nimbleness were king in that context. Anything more blade-heavy would have to work hard to get a rapier's point off-line and *keep* it off-line, and thrust attacks have not only greater reach compared to the sweet spot for cutting, but also the benefit of being very hard to see coming.

For street self-defense, though, a wakizashi is as close to objectively better as you can probably manage because it's much more comfortable and convenient to wear, it's much faster on the draw, the blade length is much more usable in tight spaces, and cutting attacks are better for both warding off multiple opponents and closing off opposing lines of attack.

I've gotta disagree here, the one handed sword is superior in a vacuum. With a one handed sword the probability of you having an axe in the other hand is higher than with a long sword. With a long sword you must discard it entirely to properly brandish an axe. Dwarf Gang forever!

"Reach is really good" I think most people would agree

I would like it if you could list the swords you show if able. Keep up the awesome content.

Or shooting, for infinite range... (Rapier and Revolver, anyone?)

I like smaller smaller swords with a handle that can have two hands on it because #1 Both hands gives a harder swing. #2 It being smaller also makes it more maneuverable, especially with two hands. Something that can do both well if needed is my preferred anything really.

I like hand and a half sword. You aren't seemingly forced into using 2 hands but the option is there

Also a free hand is not only useful for wrestling, but also for opening doors or falling safely and stuff

Also the longsword is a 1 tempo weapon compared to the shortsword being 2 tempo. This means that with the longsword you can both attack and defend at the same time while with the shortsword have to defend then attack.

For me personally the shortsword provides the advantage that I am able to fight with either hand wielding the sword which can throw off my opponent.

It’s really not a direct competition as they are made for different purposes

Now do 3 swords vs 2 swords vs 1 sword
