Regardless of what’s actually better for the competition, I love my one handed backhand and when it comes off, it’s so much fun.

A one hander can be a more potent shot, but you really need perfect timing, excellent footwork, and a strong forearm. The two hander is much more forgiving if your footwork is a little off or if youve been caught in an awkward position

Federer’s 1H seemed to break down when rallies got longer, as they did with Djokovic’s defences, but then again Wawrinka’s 1H seemed to be as strong as any 2H. Perhaps that’s testament to Wawrinka’s particular technique and more muscular body type

"They look much better."
Ok, so I'll keep on working on one-handed backhands :D

I agree with him. I think the two-hander is the safer shot and the one I would teach youngsters and people who are introducing themselves to tennis. The slice and the volleys can still be easily learned off a two-hander. However, there’s no denying that one-handers look very stylish!!!

One-handed BH has the potential of more power, spin and reach, but the two-handed BH has more control and can more easily handle higher balls, meaning you can stay closer to the baseline and take time away from your opponent. Control is easily the winner in the modern game with longer rallies, and counterpunching is often enough power because in the modern game, the opponents hit with so much consistent pace. I've played with both, and playing with the one hander developed my slice BH, which is great for both variety and defense with the two-hander. But when I made the switch to the two-hander, my game made a big switch forward and I could take the ball so much earlier. Also, I see the two-handed BH kinda as a combo of dominant hand backhand and a non-dominant hand forehand. My BH is non-dominant hand dominant, dominant hand is just there for more control.

honestly the most fun to watch and just the best as a whole are the players who switch it up between one and two handed (like Murray) the change in rhythm is honestly brilliant to watch

Nadal is retiring so high balls to the one hander are no longer an issue for players on tour.

Im a one-hander but i use a 2H when i need to hit a lob, 2H definitely feels more natural for that type of shot like a golf swing.

My disadvantage for the 2 hander is fatigue. Noone else says this so i must be doing something wrong but i find the set up of the backhand way more tiring than the single. It just takes it out of me, its like doing a lunge every single shot😅

One comment. Roger in 2017 showed an incredible, new OHBH. And he won a lot. Secret is to learn to attack with top spin, with OHBH too. That was considered impossible. It isn't. Maybe it's more difficult.

Justine henin had the greatest backhand ever she could generate a pace of 150 kmph with her beautiful backhand top spin slice drop shots that back hand had everything such a weapon really

He forgot one thing - the volley - one hand back handed players generally volley better - more fluent and its a more natural shot

I use both interchangeably even though I was advised against it. I find returns and high balls much easier with the two or if I'm on the defensive. I switch to a one hander for winners, low balls and on the run backhands. Also I wonder if this variability confuses my opponent or adds disguise

You forgot:
1. One handed has more power because of increased leverage and more fluid body rotation.
2. One handler has more reach.
3. One handler makes your transition to the net easier.
4 the two handed is easier to change ball direction
5 the two hander is easier to disguise

The one handed backhand requires additional training and strengthening of the e small muscles of the shoulder and back. You can do it with the elastic resistance bands.

COUNTER-PUNCHING! Now that’s a shot one doesn’t hear much of in the men’s professional tennis game!

Sir good day. I’m 46yrs old 5’3” tall. I feel more comfortable using a junior sized tennis racquet than the regular one. Can you advise me whether to continue using the junior size or not . If so, what string tensions should I use. I play tennis for exercise and recreation only.

One hander, a modern one at least:
Looks better, easier to generate your own power, easier access to topspin, more variety of same shot in terms of how it reaches opponent, easier to mix up with the slice, easier access to angles.

Two hander:
More stable shot (helps with extra hand on the stretch, on return of serves etc), more forgiving (easier when late or not in position or footwork not quite right or even when on the run), can more easily redirect/use incoming pace, less to go wrong with it thereby increasing consistency and predictability of what comes off the racket, more time on the ball meaning harder to be put under pressure.

I surprised by Patrick’s simplified explanation of both shots. There are way more advantages to the one hand backhand. For one it give you a further reach and allows you to get in place quicker. He himself uses it.
