You want to be able to take your dog on a peaceful walk, but you know if you encounter another dog or person that your dog is going to go crazy and start barking! Embarrassing? Don't sweat it! This is normal for many dogs! BUT I'll show you how to teach them to behave acceptably in this situation! Hope it helps!

Can you do a video on how to safely socialize your dog if they weren't socialized as a puppy

For those that didn't think this helped listen again at 2:30 it's important that you've already trained your dog to pay attention to you when called while walking. Paying attention for signs my dog will bark and quickly getting his attention and going the opposite direction before he even barks then praising and treating him has helped tremendously, now my dog almost never barks even without doing this, he's associated seeing people and dogs with a positive experience and he knows I won't put him in any situation he doesn't want to be in, this is why it's so important to pay close attention to your dog at this stage, if he's already barking it would be extremely difficult to get him to stop barking and divert his attention to you.

Our dog barks when he sees a person or another animal that isn't my mum, dad my siblings and me. He also barks when he hears the door bell ring. Whenever ppl come to our house they think he's very aggressive and complain about him when he really just wants to play.

My dog goes nuts when we meet other dogs in our path. He just want to play but gets so anxious to go to the other dog that he eventually barks, pulls the leash, etc. How can I stop him from doing so?

My dog is getting much better after implementing your tactics. I believe that the best thing has to do with me remaining calm when she gets excited. Not 100% there yet but I believe we’ve had about an 80% improvement. Thank you. And I agree with you that people think the excitement is aggression, when in reality she just wants to play. Thank you again.

Thank you for this guide! An oddly high number of other tips always started and emphasized the tactic of "avoid all other dogs/triggering stimulus" which, imo, is counterintuitive considering I'm looking for how to train them to stop this behavior, not avoiding the cause. That's like saying to your doctor "my shoulder hurts when I raise my arm" and being sincerely told "then don't do that". My dog likes going on walks. Idk if there's some magical section of dogs that naturally don't bark at other dogs, but as far as I'm aware most dogs do that naturally. I just want to be able to bring him to events around town or even on some vacations without him getting hyperfocused on every other dog he passes by. I don't need to be told "your dog won't bark at other dogs if he never sees one, duh"

I laughed when you said picking them up is a good short term solution because I’ve been walking my new roommates small dog along with my dog and he goes CRAZY when we pass other dogs so I just started picking him up and he immediately calms down and stops barking. Then when I put him back down a minute later he acts PERFECT. works like a charm every time. Pretty sure when I pick him up he feels emasculated lol

This video reminded me that I needed to think situationally. My 1 year old malti-poo beanie was used to his off leash training at my old home. He was well socialized and loved all people and dogs. Then we moved. He went from a sociable loving puppy to a stressed territorial barker. I knew he was probably scared but after watching your video I realized he was in a new place, trying to figure out where he stood in this new world. I worked with him one night showing him he needed to trust me and he is already showing improvement. So many times I think dogs become the way they are out of our own laziness or simply not knowing what to do. So beneficial to start with puppies as Early As Possible. It’s never too early to teach a puppy something, even if it’s desensitization.

This video is custom-made for a woman who called me today about her lunging, leash-reactive dog. I shall send it to her immediately.
Thanks Zak.

“Be able to reason with him in a heightened state of mind”
that clicked for me!!! I have been finding myself freezing and not knowing how to react. This entire video was so helpful. Thank you

Lots of good advice here but it wasn't very instructional. For most people, it takes step by step instructions and a demo of those steps for them to understand how to deal with problematic dog behaviors. This structure is easier for the dog's progress too and I think this video should have provided a more structured plan for reducing reactivity rather than just tips.

Thanks Zak for the videos. One week ago, I adopted a rescued dog. She's 2yrs old, female operated, 50lbs Labrador-Bretanny Spaniel. Indoors and with people/children she is extraordinarily well behaved and gentle. However, she has intense separation anxiety, and barks at dogs (no real bite). We made it to dog parks and it runs smoothly with the other dogs after a while. But the dog walk and encounter with random dog+dog walker are explosive. I'm used to a high energy dog, I had an Italian Greyhound that needed loads of regular sprints to be calm at home, and he was. But that dog, she pulls so hard all of a sudden, I'll dislocate my shoulder!

She had an obedience training at 1yr old and I am trying to figure out the language code. This morning we reviewed the hand signals for sit and down. I taught my mother the signs as well, since we are visiting. It works, and so on to the next task. Barking at other dogs. Indoors I'm quick to catch her, and reward good behavior. Outdoors, there's a lot to pay attention for both, so we'll start small with the eye contact first, and then baby step, walking the dog on the bike/walk path. I won't be stingy on the treats and will bring enough to give out for passerby who want to treat her good behaviors as well. Let's see how today's training does, and I'll be sure to look up more of your videos for more training tips>>>especially the "out there in the wild where things are unpredictable and move fast and make loud noise."

I absolutely love this it helped SO much. Yesterday if my dog saw or heard a person he would go absolutely crazy! But now a day later he is so calm.

My dog max barks when he sees someone walking outside, every single item there's someone at the door (even if he knows it's one of us). He even barks for 20 seconds after we come in the doors

Just starting this technique but so far it’s working well for my dog! It was great getting to see in the clip of Charlie and Camryn in action because it settled my worries to know that it’s normal while training this for my dog to go between coming to me, then bark/attention to the other dog, then back to me again. Thanks!
