Why Did Moses Veil His Face? || Exodus 34:29-35 Bible Study

Why did Moses put a veil over his face when it was shining after being in the presence of God? Was it because the Israelite people were too scared to come near him while his face was shining? Was it because Moses needed to protect the people from the holiness of God? I think we'll see in today's Bible study that the Lord was quite clear about why Moses veiled his face after being in the presence of the Lord. There is a great connection to the New Covenant to be seen, but as always we'll have to get into the Word to really grasp how this bible story applies to us. Grab a bible and open it up to Exodus 34:29-35 and let's get into today's bible study.

The Whole Truth is dedicated to taking you through the entire Bible, from Genesis all the way through Revelation without skipping anything.

The book of Exodus shows us not only how the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, became God's chosen people but it also show us how we can live as God's people in 2021.

Never heard it that way before. I went back to the text to read it and it does say that when the people saw him they were afraid because he was radiant. But I did not catch that he put the veil on after he spoke to them. I don’t know why in my head I envisioned him covering his face to talk to the people. Really thought provoking, thank you.

I am an ELCA Lutheran from South Carolina. Today (February 27, The Transfiguration of Our Lord), this was our Old Testament Lesson of the Day. And so ends the Season of Epiphany.

Hey I understand exactly what you’re saying, Moses didn’t ask for his face to be glowing or shining, however we do see him ask in Exodus chapter 33, to see GOD’S glory

This is also a symbol concerning Jesus. After His forty days of fasting and praying the Lord started His ministry, and because He was God in the flesh, He did not wear a veil because He was revealing who He really was, God in the flesh. Remember when He tells His disciples, "if you see me you see the Father". God, in Christ, removed the veil.

Awww man, I get it now. I’ve been studying both testaments (probably not as deeply as I could have I suppose), but really couldn’t understand Moses’ radiant glow and how it was perceived by the Israelites. I thought they were afraid being the reason why I misread Moses putting on the veil to protect them from God’s glory. I only focused on Exodus 34:30, but when you explained it and how the rest of the chapter reads….how Moses put the veil on AFTER giving the Lord’s instructions to the ppl….then I finally got what Paul was talking about! Thank you 🙏

Wow great stuff great stuff 👏 I couldn't agree more. I didn't see the passage from that perspective 🤔 The idea that getting close to God has a physical effect on you that is glorious, and to not put a veil over it but instead let it shine like Moses did. And also the interpretation of Paul saying that Moses put the veil on after talking to people so that they could see the glory before it passes away. Very interesting.
I thought the passage was trying to foreshadow a future anointed person (the messiah, Jesus). Moses' face shone but Jesus' entire body shone and was transfigured before his disciples. The Jews saw a glimpse of the glory of the Messiah.

Moses was a shy and humble person. He just didn't liked to be looked at

I’m this up and trying to understand it because last year I was told I was born this way.. my mother water didn’t break when she had me, they call it a “en caul birth” but I’m guessing in the Bible it’s label as the “veil” the only difference is that my whole body came out in it and it wasn’t just my face covered.. so I’m just looking for a deeper meaning behind it

Maybe Moses unveiled his face when he was speaking for God (he let his face shine with the authority of God) and then veiled his face when he spoke for himself (such that no one would mistake his humanity for divinity)?
