Shahzeem Pasha comes from a family of gemstone traders in Singapore. He loves the thrill of chasing beautiful stones across the globe.

A favourite client wants to celebrate a big wedding anniversary with an Emerald ring and earrings to match. Shahzeem entrusts Bangkok, Thailand-based Jeffrey Bergmen, with the task of securing a Columbian Emerald. Colombian Emeralds, the world’s finest, are mined in several ways. Big companies work underground while independent miners known as guaqueros mine placer-style along riverbanks. In Bangkok, Jeffrey has it cut, polished and certified, then ships the Emerald to Shahzeem. Working with local designers, Shahzeem gets the stone set in a ring.

==========
About the show: Gemstone dealer and jeweller Shahzeem Pasha sources precious stones – Emeralds, Rubies, Sapphires and Diamonds from around the world and sets them in bespoke jewellery pieces for selected clients.

The ring turned out to be stunning. I loved this background story. When you buy a piece of jewelry and it seems expensive, once you see all that goes on from the mining to the selling on the streets to the brokers to the gen cutters to the jewelry designers, I am in awe. A piece of jewlery is well worth the price. Thank you for this amazing documentary!

It amazes me how few jewelers here in the Central Valley of California know anything about emeralds, and how most have never even seen a Colombian Emerald. The vast majority have only seen Zambian emeralds, which are typically darker and have more inclusions than Colombian emeralds have.

It first came to my attention when I brought a Colombian emerald to what was supposed to be one of my city's best jewelers. He looked at it (it was a FLAWLESS Colombian of perfect color) and told me in a nonchalant way "The color is OKAY, but not great. Now let me show you what an emerald is supposed to look like" upon which he brought out a tiny Zambian. I told him "That's a ZAMBIAN emerald! It's supposed to have a darker color than what I showed you because the stone I own is from COLOMBIA." He looked at me with a confused look. I asked him "Haven't you ever seen one from Colombia?" Not only had he never seen one, he said he'd never even heard of a "good" emerald coming from Colombia, lol!

Folks, never buy a loose gemstone from a jeweler in the Central Valley of California....at least not an emerald. 🙄🤨

Papua New Guinea is a gem frontier, with a non-existent industry yet we have gemstones. If you'd like to come over, I can be happy to assist. This is an interesting post. Keep it up!
