Emeralds: in the Heart of the Green Diamond Business

preview_player
Approximately 90% of the emeralds sold globally come from Colombia. While the official market is regulated, a black market has developed that is largely unchecked. This illegal sector is more lucrative than the gold or diamond trade. A journalist in Bogota is uncovering the truth behind this illicit industry, and the “esmeralderos”, or emerald traders, who sell their wares on the streets. The emeralds come primarily from Muzo, located in the north of the country. The ten nearby mines supply 75% of the world’s emeralds and are renowned for producing the highest quality gems.

One of the best documentaries about emeralds in Colombia. Thanks god all of you are safe because the areas where you were filming are very dangerous.

I love emeralds, green is my favorite color and I always imagined emeralds when I heard or thought of Colombia. That is.. until I came to know about the most gorgeous lion named Jupiter who, I pray, is still over there. More beautiful and magnificent than any emerald can ever be.

Anyone else rather have subtitles than voice over? Idk maybe I’m weird but I want to hear the persons actual voice.

Watching this video in 2023. Will negotiations change if these countries adopt a cashless system? I thoroughly enjoyed the video. Old school way of doing business.

Watching this was so heartbreaking. I had a beautiful emerald cut emerald my dad bought my mom in 1974 when we lived in Bogota. It was the size of the smallest of the 3 and my roommate stole it 2 years ago. My biggest regret. I still cry over it. Not fair.

As some one who has worked in a variety of security scenarios, this Viedo is absolutely dangerous for the future of the dealers and the ones traveling with cash etc... Other than that great video!
