WHY TURKISH PEOPLE LOVE CATS

Have you ever wondered, “why there are so many cats all around Turkey?”
You can see cat houses in the streets. You can see water and food bowl for street animals all around Turkey!

Why people in Turkey feed Stray animals?
Well, It is a historical thing, Turkish people have always had a soft spot for street animals.
They feed them, they pet them, they do whatever they can for them!
There are 2 main reasons for the cat-loving nature of the Turkish people.

The first one is, during the Ottoman period common folk were quite unhappy about the mice problem in the cities. To avoid them they took cats as pet animals. They feed them so that they can deal with the mice problem. Since those times Turkish people loved and adored cats. This is a quite common theory.

The second one is because of the Islam religion. Prophet Muhammad loved cats. Turkish people are looking up for their prophets as a Muslim majority country and thus, cats are loved here.

Whatever the reason might be, there is a certain fact that in Turkey, cats are the kings and the queens of the streets.

"According to the New York Times Research, there are more than 125.000 cats living in Istanbul streets."

It is true that, you can judge a man's heart through his treatment to animals.

The main reason for this is based on the old religion of us Turks, Tengrism. Tengri worship consisted of giving thanks to nature, for example, tengri was worshiped by giving food (water, milk, wheat, etc.) to feed animals living in nature.

İm from turkey and i must say that these things are wrond XD the Real reasons we love cats are they are sweet they care about us and we love every animal i have Guinea pigs hamsters and 2 cats XD we think that animals and humans are the same we cant just let them die and we hate what ameicans do to the street animals im beliaving god but not all of the stuff for me killing animals is cruel they have life top u cant just take someones life KİLLİNG AN ANİMAL İS A REALLY BİG CRİME İN TURKEY ( not just cats)

In Turkey, dogs are loved and cared as well but muslims even though they treat kindly do not let dogs enter their houses generally. Not like cats.

Islam has nothing to do with this cultural phenomenon. You can't see same behavioral traits in other muslim nations. Quite frankly street animal are seen as pests in other muslim countries. And islam is not all animal friendly religion either. Yes islam tolerates cats a lot but Islam also doesn't like dogs at all. Some sects see dogs as unclean animals which can distrupt ritual ablution period which is essential to preparation of prayer. Islam also hates lizards. Prophet himself advises to kill lizards. Many people in Turkey don't do that. Some houses in western and southern seaside towns has tiny wall lizards which are called "süleymancık". They're pretty much harmless and i don't see anyone kill any of those tiny lizards. So what makes us so tolerant against animals? I'd say cultural heritage which has roots in the ancient Turkic belief systems such as animism, shamanism and tengrism. But i really don't know for sure. All i know that we still has old cultural traditions which originated back in central asia.
