PSA: Don't Copy and Paste Messages on Discord!

Copy and pasting just got buffed on Discord.

Because whether you like it or not, Discord is filled with snot nosed goblins that try to ruin your day. And their new tactic is a doozy. It can get your Discord server raided or get you completely banned off Discord. Now most people don't bat an eye when it comes to copy and pasting messages, what you see is what you get. However with a bit of linguistic (as well as unicode) trickery, things can be more dangerous than you think!

Rule number one: Don't click any links you're not sure of, Rule number two: Somebody on a forum tells you to "copy and paste this thing", the last thing you do is copy and paste the thing.

nah just don't copy text from non-sanitized text (only copy from real and normal discord messages, not fancy embeds, text files, or code blocks), and don't copy text in other languages that you don't understand, and if someone says the message to verify using "i am 12" in another language you can literally report them back.

A friend of mine got banned from discord for saying "God I feel like a 10 year old right now" Say what you will about Discord's zero tolerance stance to joking about being under 13, but I don't know how you can read that message and think he's actually 10.

How to avoid this:
Step 1: Always try translating it first.
Step 2: Try to read it backwards
Step 3: If u can't read it backwards, use websites to reverse the string (sentence/word) and then translate it.

As a European who has watched Eurovision in my youth, I thought the scam-part was "J'ai douze ans", meaning "I'm twelve years old" in French, and that it would then report you for underage on the platform. I was wrong.

for the people asking; no, removing right to left override is not an option as it will make discord unusable for any language that is written right to left, which is a lot more people than you might expect (more than half a billion world wide population).

the only real way for people to not get falsely banned is by making the moderation process less automated, after all its clear that auto bans get more innocent people banned than guilty.
the more complicated discord makes their system, the more ways there will be to exploit it.

2:01 I like the idea of banning underage people, because they actually ask you to not lie about it to "gain free nitro". There can be 2 outcomes, the kid is purssued by aged ones or they get banned. One is bad and other is good at my vision

The reason the message seems to flip after sending is that discord actually removes the right-to-left override (which is the reason the message looks like it's backwards in the first place) from your message upon sending, which is why it has to be sent as a text file.


I assume they did this after people started messing with it, just like with a bunch of whitespace characters, but there are some right-to-left characters that still work and don't get stripped, some show up on mobile, some on desktop.
