Some people big mad in here for no reason. You're playing it just fine, it's clean and airy. But from the help I've read, yes you gotta chuck at the guitar, your fret hand mutes all strings except the one string that plays the note. There's a lot of strumming and chucking to get the funky sound from the riff. Me personally, I don't play an open D string and opt for the fretted note instead for consistency.
