This is great advice for young ladies too. I was a silent child. I only spoke to immediate family and very close friends.
I was often so quiet that the adults forgot that I was there.
I learned a lot that way.
Even as a young adult I was very quiet most of the time.
I'm still so quiet that when people finally realize I'm there it startles them.
You can't learn anything while you're jabbering away about nothing.
One big bonus that you may not have considered is that when quiet people speak people listen more carefully because they know that you're not fixing to blabber on and on for an hour about nothing.
